RE: trying to stop pumping

I have 2 questions.

I've been pumping now for my 14 month old ds for 11 months. I'm so glad I was able to provide him with only breast milk for the first 6-7 months of his life without supplementing and he bfeeds on demand when I'm with him. I am just sooooo ready to stop pumping. I am down to pumping only once a day, and can usually get up to 10 ounces in a single pump (although not today - today I only got about 8). The sitter relies on the bottle to get him to take a nap and the 2 times we tried cow's milk, he wasn't too pleased. I don't have any plans to wean him, I'm just ready to stop pumping...any ideas?

The other thing is, my nipples and part way up the areola seem to be peeling, very slightly but it's noticeable to me. Also, my ds had a mild diaper rash - I'm a little afraid it could be thrush. I can't tell if ds has white spots in his mouth caused from milk or something else. What are the first symptoms of thrush? It doesn't hurt when I nurse, although I've been a little sore lately but I thought that was because of his last biting episode (don't let this scare you, those of you who haven't dealt with biting yet - it wasn't THAT bad and it was partly my fault for not recognizing that he was just playing and not eating.)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I would consider weaning him from the bottle under those circumstances, but that is a topic of hot debate. :) My dd is 13mo and still takes a bottles for naps (from DH only), so who am I to talk?

I don't blame you for not wanting to pump any longer. I got down to pumping once a day at work, and waited a little longer each day until I thought I could make it till I got home to nurse - and I did. You are doing a wonderful thing to still be pumping at this stage!

You probably don't have thrush since you don't have any of the major symptoms. You always have *some* yeast in your system, thrush is just an imbalance. If the thought worries you, even though it doesn't seem to be actually hurting you, you can try having a yogurt each day and that should help push you back into the "middle ground" if you are borderline.

Leslee,

My daughter doesn't tolerate cow's milk and after a year I started giving her goat milk. She had no reaction to that so it was what I stuck with for a couple years. I was able to get it at my local Safeway. It does sound like it could be thrush. http://www.lactivist.com/thrushlink.htm

Leslee,

Welcome. If the deal for your son is bottle *and* what is in it for the nap, you can try decreasing the volume and see if he will go to sleep on gradually less. If the deal for your son is *something in a bottle* you can try water, soy milk, etc., until you find something that he does like.

I want to thank you all for your help to my questions about bottle and pump weaning. We're going to start "diluting" the expressed milk with cow/soy milk little by little so I can finally stop pumping after 11 months!

Thanks for your help - I have gained so much info from you guys - I don't feel like I'm so much in the dark dealing with this new, exciting experience of motherhood.
