Guest guest
I am interested in knowing about toxicity of too much vitamin E. Guest guest
Drs. Cohen and Gold in " Treatment of Mitochondrial Cytopathies " recommend vitamin E at 400 to 1200 IU per day in divided doses as appropriate antioxidant therapy, given the excessive free radicals that occur in mito disorders. In the latest UMDF newsletter, Dr. Tarnopolsky recommends vitamin E at 250 to 500 mg twice daily or 10- 15 mg/kg/day. This does not directly address your question about toxicity, but the mito experts do feel these doses are generally safe. Barbara > > > >> Beth... It's really great to hear from you today. Do > you have information you could point me to? Vitamin E Toxicity Adults have taken relatively large amounts of vitamin E (400 to 800 mg/day of d--tocopherol) for months to years without any apparent harm. Occasionally, muscle weakness, fatigue, nausea, and diarrhea have occurred in persons taking 800 to 3200 mg/day. The most significant toxic effect of vitamin E at > 1000 mg/day is antagonism to vitamin K action and enhancement of the effect of oral coumarin anticoagulants, which may result in overt hemorrhage. This is from the Merck Manual which I consider a reliable souce. It is the book doctors go to for information such as this. laurie > > > > >> Laurie, >> Wouldn't that be about 900 IU a day of vitamin E (3000 times the >> recommended dosage?) Guest guest
I was worried about my 11 year old getting too much vitamin E also but the dr that diagnosed our melas says the $450 mg he gets with the 3 qgel he takes is safe. I asked both my cardiologist who did Vitamin E research in cardiac disease for 11 yrs and my IV nutrition dietician about how much is too much. Both said that studies have been done with doses up to 2000 IU's a day and I should be okay. They did recommend that I get my vitamin E level checked though to make sure it isn't too high and also recommended having my PT and PTT checked since Vitamin E can inhibit clotting and prolong the PT and PTT (clotting times). Guest guest
Wow..I didn't mean to stir up so much with this subject. In my case...taking 1000 mg daily of CoQ the amount is 1500 IU which even Tishon feels is too much. Alice Re: Vitamin E and toxicity Drs.
