I absolutely agree. No way could Dylan use a scooter with his shoulders. An

electric chair with a supported arm for the controls is the only thing he could

use. Cindy, think carefully before you buy. My mom also couldn't use a scooter

because of the twisting of the body needed to get into the seat. The scooter

platform is raised, and she had to climb in with one of her two bad knees. Not a

good thing. Cindy C.

Just a thought check positions CAREFULLY to prevent further

strain/injury to youself. I prefer the power chairs due to the better

position the body is in.

Hi Cindy,

Talk to your vendor and ask them to turn down the speed. This is what we

did for 's chair. He can't go faster than I can walk.

C.

Thank , I didn't know they could do that. I know if this chair can go

25mph, than when he has the chance, he'll open that baby up, just for kicks.

Scares the gageebers out of me.! Cindy C.

Hi,

I agree totally on the scooter vs. power wheelchair discussion. One

thing I didn't see mentioned, was the fact that you would constantly

lean forward with a scooter. Look at the people using them... I have

never seen one of them sit properly leaning towards the back of the

chair. With a chair it is also easy to get around on your very worst

days when your back and neck acts up. The power chair I use the most

has a fantastic seat, I have even slept in it several times as it has

so many different options for postioning. When I am travelling, I

often use it as a recliner. If you are to get a chair, it is very

important to try to get the very best seating. So many has such bad

seats and backs... A proper pressure relieving cushion and an

ergonomic back can save you so much pain. It is also very useful if

you can get a recliner back and seat tilt. These two together makes

it so much easier for you to get into a position where you take the

strain off your back. Also that the foot rest can go up, is useful in

this. It is very nice being able to get your feet up sometimes. I do

it a lot when my knees act up.

The two chairs I have, are the Permobil Chairman 2k, which has a

unique suspension which is very useful for us with EDS. It has the

Corpus Seating. The other one is the Permobil Trax. You see both of

these during the intro at http://www.permobilusa.com/

When you go to http://www.permobilusa.com/index2.htm (skipping the

intro then), you can see pictures of different models. Under the

1968, there's a line of the chairs they have now. The Chairman 2k is

the one in the left. It is newer but does not look as " aerodynamic "

and cool as the older Chairman, but the batteries last and the

suspension which does require space in the box under the chair,

requires a different box. But all-in-all it does look sporty for a

power wheelchair and it is no less than fantastic. Everybody I have

met who have one, simply loves them. It is really a best friend in my

daily life, no doubt about that. It makes it possible to do so many

things. I even went to Lanzarote with it, and there are a lot of

really high curbs there. I got over them... I met several Brits in

scooters who had a lot of problems, they could not believe their eyes

when they saw me handeling the edges. I was in doubt as to which

chair to bring there, because the Trax, which is the third chair from

the left. The picture shows it when you electrically lengthen it to

increase stability. I do have the Corpus seating with a neck rest on

this one too, not the tiny seat they show on that picture. The guy in

the intro has the same one as me. I don't have the bow over it in

case I tilt over either. It is useful especially for kids who go

bananas outside. I have a girl in my neighbourhood, she's around 14,

who rides this everywhere. I see her in the morning, going to school.

She always have a girlfriend sitting below her seat in front of her.

They have found their own way of riding to the school, it seems. This

chair is a very sporty one, with a lot of features that lets you even

go off track. It is really great for young kids, and an alternative

to a scooter for those that wants something really rugged for outdoor

use, but can't use a scooter. It may be a problem to get coverage for

such a wheelchair though.

Shanti, my beloved Yorkie, and I used to go in the woods together

with the Trax. She went exploring, and I just followed her. Peanut

and I haven't done it yet. She loves exploring, actually even more

than Shanti did. Peanut is a darling too.... I love her to bits...

She is such a funny little one... I miss Shanti so terribly

though... Tomorrow it is a year since she died, I can't believe it is

a year... Luckily I have little Peanut though, don't know what I had

done without her... She is a real little cutie... Everybody loves

her. She even has her own ID card at my office... Right now I am

working up courage to give her a bath, she hates that with a

passion!!! Ooops, that turned into a digression...

If you are interested in looking a bit at chairs, the Permobil site

is really nice to have a look at. I did a search at eBay a while

ago, and was really surprised to see so many wheelchairs for sale

there. Getting one that is adapted and sized right for you is very

important, but if you have all the details on how it should be, and

maybe even have tried a model, eBay might be worth to check.

Especially if you don't have insurance... I saw a really nice sporty

manual chair (much like my manual ones for those that have seen

them) go for around $200 a while ago... It looked like it barely had

been used.
