I was considering taking it but I don't know how serious the side affects are and if they occur with most people?? Because I know they have serious possible side affects,but does they really occur in a lot of peoples' lives? Does anyone here know much about that product? Guest guest Posted November 3, 2003 Report Share Posted November 3, 2003 I took accutane in 1990. It was a miracle for me. It is pretty serious. Your skin gets really dry and you look 10 times worse for a bit, but overall worth it. Don't drink any alcohol as it could damage your liver. Being that you are a guy, you need not worry if you get pregnant, though I'm not sure what effects you could have on a girl. There has been depression issues associated with Accutane. having used the product, I think it is more a result of looking so bad because of the skin dryness rather than a chemical thing. Guest guest Posted November 4, 2003 Report Share Posted November 4, 2003 Are you considering Accutane for true acne, or acne related to surgery? It is a very serious drug. In response to one of the other comments, the issues with depression are truely chemical, not because of other side effects of the drug. It also isn't just depression, but an increased incidence of suicide. It is VERY rare, but something to consider none the less. I would have to have SERIOUS acne and have exhausted all other avenues before I would consider this drug. As others have said, it causes severe dryness, but it does work wonders. I'm on Proactiv right now, it has helped my acne slow down, but it's not strong enough so my skin isnt really that much clear. Do you think the doctor will prescribe Acutane for me if my acne is not out of control? Or should I stop using the proactive and let my acne flare up? Guest guest Posted November 5, 2003 Report Share Posted November 5, 2003 Since you are a woman - be prepared for the most amazing amount of paperwork if you do ask for accutane. You are required to take 2 pregnancy tests before a doc can prescribe it, and sign all these forms that say you will use 2 forms of contraception (one being something pretty full on like the pill, injection or IUD, along with a 'secondary' method). The paperwork also says you must take a monthly pregnancy test in order to get refills. And the tablets themselves are covered with pictures of a pregnant woman with a big red line thru them. Just thought you'd like to know! I wasn't prepared for it and found it a little freaky. In the end I didn't take them for very long at all!
