Guest guest
I went to my neurosurgeons visit today, he had the pathology report but not any of the special tests like the resp chain etc... The report says the following, ( ill sum it up ) Sections demonstrate essentially normal fiber size and shape with several rare scattered atrophic fibers seen. These are nonspecific esterase negative. the percentage of fibers with internal nuclei is mildly increased. I am curious, atrophic fibers are what? what is nonspecific esterase negative? what is internal nuclei? thanks
Guest guest
Atrophic fibers are ones who have shrunk and probably do little to no good. I'm not sure about the nonspecific esterase negative and internal nuclei that are mildly increased. Have you done a web search on these? laurie > > Reply-To: > Date: Fri, 02 Apr 2004 04:06:20 -0000 > To: > Subject: Preliminary muscle biopsy report > > I went to my neurosurgeons visit today, he had the pathology report > but not any of the special tests like the resp chain etc... > The report says the following, ( ill sum it up ) > Sections demonstrate essentially normal fiber size and shape with > several rare scattered atrophic fibers seen. Guest guest
, geez, dont you love when you get reports like that- it sounds like its basically normal but not quite. This is my opinion on your questions and stuff: atrophic fibers are what? I'm guessing that they saw rare scattered muscle fiber that was atrophied or muscle that had shrunk, 'wilted'. They probably will say that rare scattered atrophy fibers is related to the aging process or something. what is nonspecific esterase negative? I did a search on this and it seems that this is something used for different types of tissues (not just muscles) and it tests for many things ranging from cancers to neuromuscular conditions- but I'm thinking that yours was negative? I'm also assuming that since there were the rare few atrophic fibers, they were just seeing if there was anything abnormal about them and this was one way of doing it. So far doesnt look like it shows anything- or that lovely nonconclusive/nonspecific findings type of things. Oh, the last one..... what is internal nuclei? It says something about this precentage being slightly increased, but increased from what i wonder? From the normal percentage it should be? Well I did a search and came up with this one page, it actually has stuff about several of the things you mentioned, though its a bit scientific, still might be worth looking at: http://www.thedoctorsdoctor.com/diseases/mitochondrial_myopathy.htm The above site, I looked though and couldnt find anything specifically about internal nuclei, but the search engine came up with it and it says alot of things about mito- so its probably in there, just so much info! I dont know what the internal nuclei increase might be- though through my searching i just did, sounds like it does happen with mito and related disorders. though of course if your dr is like alot of them- he might not make much of it since it says 'mildly increased'. Though the rest of your tests might explain these other confusing nonspecific findings. I guess this is why Dr. Shoffner isnt giving me mine until he has everything- so that if anything is abnormal but doesnt make sense or whatnot, then maybe the other tests will explain it. When are you getting yours back? I found out yesterday that they are doing the final test they have to do on my muscle on Monday then it will take 7-10 days for Dr. Shoffner to write up the report then he will mail it to me and my dr. So hoping to get it about 2 wks hopefully! I cant remember now when you had yours done but hopefully both of ours will give some answers we need but if they dont, we know that it doesnt exclude mito and it might just have to be later on in the future when they know more when we get a specific diagnosis. I'll be thinking bout you though. take care, Adrienne
