Thanks so much you guys for your encouragement to be persistent with the camp

thing! Today was our day. All morning my phone has been ringing! The kids

not only are going to get to go to MDA camp, but Dream Street foundation

called and they will get to go to camp with them as well. Wow! I was a bit

embarrassed when Dream Street called and thanked her, told her they were going

to

MDA camp, and she said well is it the same week. I said no but they are getting

to go to camp for free already. She said well they can still go with us too

if you want them to go. She was funny she said it is not like Make a Wish

where it is a one time deal. We fundraise so these kids can have some fun in

the

summer. The more fun you can give them the better. It makes up for what

they go through during the year. I was like but what if they get sick, and she

said well then you are already in for next year! It is so amazing! Malibear!

Thanks for your input in this all! She even talked about you! LOL Said you

were an angel on wheels! LOLL. OK so now for those of you have sent your

kids, I could sure use some advice on what they will need, What do you send with

them, do you mark everything? I am supposed to get packets from both camps but

I would like to know what parents who have gone find helpful! I am so

excited!!!!!! Scared a bit but excited! Oh the picture was our sky this am

over

the mountains! It was so pretty! It was my sign we were in for a good day!

It is fun having an good day with some joy in it! I want to just go kiss the

mailman!!!!!!!! Just kidding!!!!!LOL Thanks for letting me share! After some

who were so rude, I was so discouraged, now I am jazzed!

big hugs to you,

YIPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. That is wonderful news . When you get your

packets from each camp they should send you a list of what you will need. I

know the MDA will for sure. You'll definitely need to label everything.

This is so exciting. Please keep us posted.

I asked the same question to the Dream Street people. They said if they

are on the younger side of 14, they should go to the younger camp. If they are

more mature and closer to 15, they may consider them for the older camp.

There is much less supervision at the older camp and it is geared more towards

the older kids wants. The younger one is more the child camp experience. If

that helps you at all. Are you guys looking at going?

I am thrilled that you got such good news today. The kids are going to love

it.

As an ex-camp counselor and the mother of two sons who went to camp, mark

everything. I used permanent marker and just put initials on socks. I

sometime had to sew in a label, such as on towels if the original was

missing. The best place to label tennis shoes is on the rubber that comes up

from the sole.

This is great! I am sure you are excited and I am excited for

you and the kids. I was able to go to Canyon Ranch last year through

Dream Street. Patty is great and if you get sick, they do take care of

you. (I know that from personal experience). They were great about it

and I am invited back this year. I am a little over the age limit for

this camp, being 27, when it is usually 18-24 year olds, but like Malisa

said, they make exceptions. I would encourage any young adult on

Mitoldies to contact Dream Street. I was not able to be in the same

group with Malisa and Adrienne last year, but still had a great time!

Your kids are going to have a great time at both camps!

I think I am somewhat confused. My daughter is 14. Which one would she

be age appropriate for, Dream Street or Canyon Ranch?

I am SOOO happy that the Kira, , and Krisalynn are going to be able to

have the camp experience. The experiences I have had at similar camps has

really helped me a lot. Please let Dr Boles know about the CA camp with Dream

Street as well. I told him about Canyon Ranch (sponsored by Dream Street) for

young adults last year and he seemed really interested.

Was it Patty that you talked with at Dream Street?!

Are the kids getting really excited yet???!!

Hi ,

a explained this really well. Dream Street has several camps for

children with illnesses across the country....a day camp in NJ, an overnight

camp

in Southern CA and a few other camps as well. As the kids that went to these

camps started getting older, the founders of the Dream Street, Patty and

Grubman started realizing that there was no place for these older teens and

twenty somethings to go and many of them still had issues of facing adulthood

with these illnesses. Thus, Canyon Ranch for young adults came into being.

The Grubmans vacationed a lot at Canyon Ranch, which is a really ritzy health

spa in Arizona....The founders of Canyon Ranch wanted to do something for

Dream Street so offered to host two weeks every summer for 20 young adults with

chronic illnesses each week. So, Dream Street pays for the airfare for all of

us to go there for an entire week which is totally free for us. It really

sounds like it's almost too good to be true that this type of week exists for

free

since it is usually close to $4000 a week to go. It really is a once in a

lifetime experience.

If you are interested in contacting Patty, the director of Dream Street, for

more info. her e-mails are below:

For the children's camps (up to around age 16) e-mail her at:

Dreamstreet1@...

For the young adult program at Canyon Ranch (roughly 18-24):

So, even though cancer and blood

The week that Adrienne and I were at Canyon Ranch there were a couple young

adults with arthritis, lupus, spina bifida, GI disorders, and other various

disorders, as well. I think they are really pretty open to accepting many

differerent kinds of chronic illnesses which was one of the things I really

loved

about them. So many times, I have seen programs that are limited to one illness

where I wouldn't qualify to participate and I came away so disappointed. They

even accepted me and a and we were a few years over their age limit! If

you want to be a part of Dream Street/Canyon Ranch they make make you feel

very welcome regardless of what disease you have.

, Dream Street funds and puts on both the Dream Street camp in

California and Canyon Ranch in Arizona. The Canyon Ranch is for young

adults dealing with the transition into adulthood. The age group is

My daughter is hoping to go to MDA camp, she has a couple of times

already, but we got our application late this year so we don't know if

there are still any openings for her. I wondered about the Dream Street

option if she didn't get into MDA camp. Thanks for the info!

Alice they qualify because they also do kids with chronic long term illness

as well. Patty is who I talked with and she is really sweet, she said that

last year they took 8 Mito patients to the Arizona camp, but hadn't taken any of

the younger ones that she was aware of, but she was excited that the word was

getting out to the Mito world.

, the address is www.Dreamstreetfoundation.org. Alice, to answer

your question, Dream Street deals with any chronic illnesses. Their main

campers are people with cancer or blood disorders. Mitochondrial

patients just showed up last year. (Thanks Malisa)! There was one other

person in my group with mito. In my group there were many young adults

with cancer, one who was on TPN, one on dialysis, and another who was

injured by getting hit by a car while saving her nieces from getting hit.

She has chronic problems due to that. So, even though cancer and blood

issues make up a lot of the campers, they are starting to expand their

horizons as more people learn about the camp. At least that is what I

gathered.
