Guest guest
Has anyone used either lactulose or lactitol for reducing blood ammonia levels? I believe lactulose is prescription only, but lactitol can be found in certain diabetic foods. I'm really frustrated that my repeated calls to the MDA clinic about my ongoing short term memory loss and whether my ammonia levels are related are going unanswered. So I am thinking of trying to take some lactitol (via yummy diabetic food chocolate bars) to help myself out. Turns out there are several studies about lactitol and lactulose both accomplishing the same thing - they aren't absorbed by the GI tract so they draw water into the stool, and somehow this helps get rid of excess ammonia in the blood. They can cause gas and diarrhea if too much is taken. I read in one place that lactitol is broken down to lactic acid, but I haven't had any weakness or other symptoms noted when I take it. Take care, RH
