Guest guest
Vivian, I don't have the book anymore, but I know the reason my gp did not put me on one of the meds back in 1997 was because it said right in the literature that it could cause lactic acidois. The mito doc Dr Tick my gp could not get hold of at the time. I could have sworn it was glucophage. I also have MELAS and documented high levels of lactic acid from a spinal tap draw. I take humalog insulin during the day and lantus at night. How are your lactic acid levels since going on the glucophage? How are your blood sugars? I was on a number of oral meds for a while but Prandin along with Avandia worked best. Janet Sample Re: BLOOD SUGAR/Janet > I have MELAS as well and am diabetic. Guest guest
Just like with the statin drugs my dr monitors me very carefully and so far no problems. It did make a difference with my numbers which were spiking for no apparent reason into the 3 and 4 hundreds. So for me it has made a huge difference. I find if you monitor and really pay attention to your body that there really aren't any hard and fast do's and don'ts each patient is different. What works for one may not work for another. For me glucophage is fine. Apparently Alice has no problems with it as well....it may not prove so for someone else. Vivian
Guest guest
both Alice and I use the glucophage. My numbers were just way too high even with lantus and humolog...and it wasn't due to any of the usual triggers. The damage that occurs at even 200 is unseen but very dangerous as you will know as a diabetic. It may be worth a shot to give it a try especially if you are having the same problem I had. Good luck. Guest guest
Thanks Vivian. Maybe I will see what my gp thinks. I have mild MELAS symptoms and other than a few blackouts over 40 years really have not have many problems with the lactic acid. Maybe the glucophage would work to lower the blood sugar which seems to be the main problem these last few years. I don't see her till June though. Guest guest
Yes, I may give it a shot. Most of the time my triggers are stress, lack of sleep, or walking/exercising alot. I got a handicapped sticker for where I was working but still the walk from my desk to the parking lot was a haul. Also shopping. As with all the other drugs that have warnings about strokes and stuff I guess I will give it a shot and see. It cannot be any worse that what I am doing now.
