Guest guest
I was told by my WLS that I would only have to take iron supps if I was still having periods. Well, I was intermittently so I tried and became so constipated and miserable. Well, I've completely stopped my periods. My WLS also said that males do not have to take iron. What do you guys think. I'm due to have my labs done next month (6 months) so I'll probably know more then, but I'm just curious about this because it seems like most of you do take iron. Is it because your iron was low or because it's always been normal and you want to keep it that way? in Akron
Guest guest
Iron is one of the basic 8 elements that are lost (to varying degrees) with the bypass. Guest guest
<> I don't take iron supplements, because my iron and blood counts have always been fine (and I am in the menstruating years). My husband does take a supplement because his iron levels dropped. Everyone is different. We both have distal procedures. Kate
Guest guest
iron is one of the tests my PCP runs every three months. My count is in the " normal " range, but the platelets are small, so I am still on over the counter ferrous fulminate (sp). Count continues to climb, will see about the platelets next time Meri Iron supps > I was told by my WLS that I would only have to take iron supps if I > was still having periods. Guest guest
I am not sure about this.....so please someone correct me if I am wrong. I THINK that the size of the platelets has something to do with how much 'fluid' they hold hence how much water you drink and hydrated one is. Guest guest
I constantly ran slightly anemic even taking two of Walgreen's Multivitamins with 18 mg of iron in each. I now take 60 me daily and have no problem. Guest guest
I for one, am still enemic, my count has always been in the 9.5 range since my RNY in 1979. After I went through the Colon resection surgery in January, 1999 my doctor advised me to take daily protein powder supplement (which they sell here through Phar-Mor), I added it to apple juice (1 tablespoon to 4oz of apple juice x 2 daily) and within 6 weeks, my count was up to 11.8... But since having problems with the fistula in September, 1999 I have been unable to take the protein supplement because of the acid conent of juice (I can't tolerate milk or such, I developed a lactose intolerance from the RNY). I have alwasy been on different perscriptioned Iron supplements, the current one being Chromagen Forte (which is much easier to absorb). I take (1) capsule 2 times daily, each capsule contains 460mg of iron & 60mg of b12). My 2cents worth ///Bob > I constantly ran slightly anemic even taking two of Walgreen's > Multivitamins with 18 mg of iron in each. Guest guest
Have you tried whey protein? Many are lactose free (I would not tolerate them otherwise), and they mix with water. I use Designer Protein powder, mixed w/ 4 - 8 ozs of water (or sometimes decaf coffee, but I'm guessing that acid wouldn't be good for you either!). I'm pretty well hooked on the chocolate powder, but the strawberry is also quite tasty. I would hate to see you missing out on the protein you need because of the mixing issue! I have no idea what effect some of the premixed drinks (such as Myoplex or Isopure) would have on your fistula, or even the pre-digested protein syrups (such as Chermino), but don't give up on your protein! Guest guest
I have been mixing my protein powder (gourmet whey chocolate/peanut butter) with coffee and SF hot chocolate mix the last couple of weeks. What a tasty treat! I was concerned that the heat from the coffee might compromise the integrity of the protein- does anyone know about this? I do know that since upping my protein intake, I have lost 6 pounds in the past 2 1/2 weeks. I was losing about 2 pounds/month before that. So something must be working! Open rny 5/23/01 Dr. Alison Clarey, D.O. - 105 lbs so far! kateseidel@... wrote: In a message dated 6/22/2002 4:59:31 PM Pacific Standard Time, bobmiedema@... writes: > I have been unable to takethe protein supplement because of the acid conent > of juice > Hi again Bob - I have always taken my protein supplement mixed with water.
