Thyroid and Fibroids--Oh My!

I have a question that maybe someone could answer. If not I can wait until I see

my GYN next month.

I am hypothyroid (underactive thyroid) and I am wondering if that has anything

to do with the promotion of fibroid growth. I found out about my thyroid last

year and have been on 75mcg synthroid since then.

Does anyone have studies or literature they can pass on to me? I appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

I also have hypothyroid. I have not heard it contributes to fibroid

growth. I was told it definitely contributes to excess bleeding. Let

me know what you find out.

Hi ,

I am also hypothyroid (I have Hashimoto's). This isn't a scientific

study, but it does suggest there's a link. It's also reassuring that

my fibroid hasn't grown any since my thyroid was (finally)

adequately treated.

The Role of the Thyroid Gland

" The health of the thyroid gland should be considered in any

debility in the reproductive organs. Hypothyroidism can be the

primary causative agent in abnormal Pap smears (Papanicolaou test);

menorrhagia (abnormally heavy or long menstrual periods); ovarian

cysts; metrorrhagia (bleeding other than that caused by

menstruation); infertility; and unsuccessful pregnancies. Fibroid

tumors are rare in women with hypothyroidism who have been

maintained on adequate thyroid therapy. It is possible to produce

fibroids in experimental animals by injections of estrogen, and

there is evidence of an excess of estrogens in hypothyroid women. "

Hi ,

In October we had a lot of information and stories coming though the

list/board about hypothyroidism.

I found this article a while back (at the beginning of my fibroid

odyssey) that spoke to the low-progesterone, estrogen dominant link

with hypothyroidism. This information is basically pulled from Dr

Lee's book: What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About PreMenopause.

Too much estrogen can lead to hypothyroidism, progesterone treatment

can restore normal thyroid levels

Here are a few links to messages and message threads about

hypothyroidism. You might also want to review the postings on the

Yahoo! Groups site for mid October to see additional postings.

Hi Gerri. Thank you so much for the link. Very informative. It's tough

being a woman---too many things to worry about! :(
