Guest guest
Hello All, Just wanted to say I am new to this site. I think the site is great, tons of wonderful information. My son is 7 mos old and just started weraing his helmut 3 weeks ago. so far so good, I just hope it works. He has brachycephaly, and was diagnosed at his 6 mos checkup. My main problem is his head is very dry, I have been applying baby lotion. Any other advice or suggestions would be great!! Thanks
Guest guest
Hi , My son also has very dry skin. I found that if I washed his hair every day as recommended by the cleaning instructions it made it really bad. I switched to a sensitive scalp shampoo (not a baby shampoo) and only wash it once a week. To cut down the 'smell' I wipe his head down with a wet washrag and clean his helmet twice a day. I also cut his hair (what little he has) very short so it doesn't take as long to dry. Guest guest
First of all I would be at that school talking with the teacher & making her aware of this & calling on the Principal while I was there. Name calling is a type of bullying which is against school laws. Take care,Betty fireflywelch1 <fireflywelch1@...> wrote: Hi, I am new and just wanted to introduce myself. I was recently told that when he goes to the library and sits at a table, the other kids will get up and move, leaving him to sit alone. Guest guest
Thanks for your comments and especially the links. I talked with the teacher and assistant Principal and they have talked with the class about kindness, etc. I just told my son two weeks ago that he had AS and would like to talk with his class. My biggest hurdle is teaching Zackary the social skills he needs to deal with others who may be unkind to him and to help him learn how to make friends. Do you have any other resources associated with helping them learn about friendship? Thanks Re: ( ) New Mom My son's speech therapist and social worker go into his classroom at the beginning of the year and talk about " The Sixth Sense " to his classmates. It is a way to teach typical peers about their classmate with autism. It should be written into the child's IEP so that it is done every year with every new class. Usually the child with autism is not in class at the time of the presentation. Guest guest
I haven't really looked at speech therapy in that way before! He could certainly benefit from it. I have an IEP meeting next week and will ask about the service. The difficulty with Zackary is he is very bright and his academics are at 5-11th grade levels (he is in 3rd grade). I would like to find a clinic that offers Social Skill in Knoxville, TN, but have not heard of one dealing with AS. He is in a social skills class at school and in OT at school. Thanks again for your help. I am excited to be a part of this group as I have often needed help with challenging situations that arise with Zackary. Guest guest
, I have the same situation with my son . He's in the above superior intelligence range. When they tested his I.Q. a few years ago, employees in the diagnosticians office actually made an extra effort to meet me, just because I was the mother of the kid with the I.Q. at the genius level! I felt like a movie star/ celebrity! I was so proud! But little did I know that his gift of intelligence would come at a price. I've found it kind of hard to have such an especially bright kid who also has neurological issues at the same time. Other parents realize his intelligence, since he share's his knowledge with ALL he meets. But it's awkward because I've chosen not to share the he has Asperger's with people and they seem to wonder why he' s got some " quirks " . Ugggg. I found the social skills therapy clinic in Houston by asking our school psychologist to check into a private social skills classes for me. She did some research with the districts Autism Team and got back with me on several great places. Guest guest
Hello, I am new to the group and wanted to introduce myself and family. My name is . My husband is . We have 2 wonderful sons named " D.J. " short for (8 years old), and Dylan (7 months). We live in Sanford, Colorado. DJ was diagnosed with AS back in May 2006. Before that he was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 5. We had tried almost all of the medications, but it seemed like he was just getting worse. Last year we were living in Arkansas and we were in the principal's office on the average of 3 days a week, because DJ was biting, fighting, kicking, pinching, screaming. Now since we moved to Colorado and we took him off of the medication and put him on RelivĀ® Now for Kids he is not so volient, but he still has his bad days at school. He will scream at the teacher and principal, distrupts the class. He is very bonable when anyone tells him to do something. As far as teaching other kids about the differences between DJ and them is that I had them watched a video about Autism, but they still pick on DJ. We have told DJ to try to be friends with all the children but they all won't be friends with you and that is okay. Just remember that you are special in your very own way and that we love you no matter what. Loving Mom in Colorado. > > Hi, I am new and just wanted to introduce myself. Guest guest
It is so nice to actually hear from someone that has had the same issues. Zackary is loved by most all adults because he can relate to them intellectually, but he is odd!!! To most kids he is just odd!!!! He doesn't share their interest and has a very difficult time " fitting in " . I will agree with you that intelligence does come with a price. I will start looking for a private social skills class as this seems to be our biggest hurdle right now. We are in a smaller town and a unique school, so some of the issues other parents are facing will begin for me when he starts 5th grade. Hopefully I will learn from all of you so I am better prepared.
