Jan. 9, 2003 -- It's a food fight! And the latest salvo is a

first-to-worst list of best-selling diet books.

Tossing the fat into the fire is the Physicians Committee for

Responsible Medicine. PCRM sees nutrition as the key to better health.

Its founder, Neal D. Barnard, MD, has written several diet books of his

own. He advocates a vegetarian diet.

This makes it no surprise that meat-shunning Dean Ornish, MD, tops the

PCRM list with an " outstanding " five-star rating. Another non-surprise:

The Atkins' diet is dubbed " unsafe " and gets no stars at all. Ornish, it

must be noted, serves as a medical advisor to PCRM, although he played

no role in the ratings. Barnard's book is not rated because it is not

among the top sellers.

The rating system isn't a mere beauty contest. Each of the best-selling

diet books gets a rating on a five-point system from PCRM nutritionist

Brie -McGrievy, RD. The system gives:

One star for offering at least 25 grams of fiber a day.

One star for offering five daily servings of fruits and vegetables.

One star for no more than 50 mg of cholesterol.

One star for no more than 30% of total calories from fat.

One star for no more than 10% of calories from saturated fat.

Ladies and gentlemen, the envelope, please. The PCRM ratings:
