Guest guest
I am 29 and getting married in april. I found out I had a fibroid about 9 months ago. At first it was the size of a cherry tomato. In July it was about 6 cm (size of a plum) and in December it had grown to about 8.6cm (size of an orange.) My doctor has told me I have a fibroid with an attitude. He sent me to a specialist about 2 weeks ago and I was given an option of watching it for a while or having a myo to remove it. I am wanting to start trying for children within probably a year or so so I am needing some advice from those who have been in my shoes. My doctor says that it is right up against my uterine lining(?) so it may be hard to conceive and/or to carry a pregnancy. Please let me hear from those who have dealt with this....and also is this fibroid big? As far as all of my ultrasounds have shown there is only one of them. I have tried to find research on size but haven't been able to really come up with anything. Any input will help! Thanks! :-)
Guest guest
You need to take your ques from the gynaecologist when it comes to pregnancy and fibroids. It depends on the individual case. If they think it's going to give you problems in pregnancy then have it treated if that's their advice. If you have the opportunity to ask them more questions about this, do so. Some women go through pregnancy with fibroids and some don't. Please note that some women need a cesarian after a myomectomy and there's no guarantee you won't get fibroids again(some women do get them again, so judge the timing of myo's and get checks in between pregnancies) Ask the gynaecologist pre-prepared prioritised questions. Wanting to have children will straight away cut out some of the treatment options you might be fretting about choosing between. The myomectomy is an option that is commonly recommended for fibroid patients wanting children in the future. On the hot topic of Uterine Artery Embolisation, you may want to weigh up for yourself the latest and most unbiassed information on possible risks to fertility. Sometimes gynaecologists and radiologists may be biassed and disagree on this topic! I chose an abdom myo. Often the women who take this treatment have said that they can live with the idea of never having children after the UAE if it doesn't go well (wrong vessels embolised in error). I simply don't know the rights and wrongs of these UAE debates. It's a comparitively appealing treatment option for some women. Nevertheless, things said about fertility and the UAE need checking out before going down that path. If your fibroids are growing and not staying the same that may be another reason not to watch and wait, if there's a good chance you'll be watching them get bigger and quite quickly. Perhaps it is time to have the operation if it's your gynaecologist's recommendation. Make sure with questions at all opportunities that the surgeon you have is experienced and with a good track record. (How many done? How often transfusions? How often turned to hysterectomy? How often post op problems?) It's the symptoms fibroids cause rather than their size that usually prompt women to have them dealt with. Fibroid treatment choices may be decided according to the type and position of fibroid you have. Sometimes symptoms are attributed to other causes and sometimes we think the fibroids are the cause of a problem and it turns out you still have a symptom after the op, suggesting that possibly wasn't the cause after all. < fibroid with an attitude> LOL <is this fibroid big?> They can be as big as a melon, but an orange is a respectable size to get rid of, since it's growing and a pregnancy may otentially make it grow more (Ask the gyn if that's the case.) <I have tried to find research on size but haven't been able to really come up with anything.> Fibroids can range in size from titchy enough to be missed by some scans and the size of a football or melon. They can make a woman look pregnant, but it depends on their location and type. The poisitiona nd type affect symptoms as much/more than their size so that comparitievly small ones can cause problems and larger ones not be so bad. I recommend fibroid books and esp online book seller selections. Aztek
Guest guest
Hello " new and need advice! " You've come to the right place for information, recommendations and answers!!!! Listen, your fibriod does sound like it loves to grow. But, don't feel to bad, you are on it and going to educate yourself to do the right thing. what symtoms are you haveing? I've heard fibroids can grow to sizes of cantalopes but don't let yours grow that big otherwise you'll run out of obtions. I myself have a 10 cm fibroid and am headed for a UFE in Feb. If I were you, check out the websight (can't link you directly, I don't know how,) United Hospital in Porchester NY has a fantastic websight on uterine fibroids and the Embolization procedure. Not that your going to go for that procedure, it talks about the size of the fibroid in relationship to uterus size, and/or fruit size. It's so thourough. Hope it helps. Guest guest
Hi kepsmiln2004, I had 2 fibroids remved last year Sept , one was plum size the other the size of an orange..I am 30 as of Dec..I have neer been pregnant in my life and asked my Dr often why? My fibroid was located right on top of my fundus and the other lay to the right..So he said this was the main culprit. The reason i got mine removed was for fertility reasons..My question to you is how long will you ttx before you decide to remove them..you said yours was in your lining?? Hmmm..you need to put action on this fast..we are young ladies but the faster it is dealt with the better.. You can also eml offline..i can tell you how the surgery was..My Dr also said it shoudl be easier for me now to fall pregnant after my myo than before.. Good luck! Guest guest
Hi. Thanks for responding natnice...My fibroid is in my uterus but is rubbing up against my lining so it isn't actually in my lining i don't think :-)(or at least that is what I got from the doctor) I was thinking of having it removed in mid-february but my wedding is in mid-april and i'm concerned about being completely recovered from the surgery..my other option is having it done this fall (there is no way i can take off at work for that long during the spring and summer) My doctor told me that i couldn't start to try having children for 6 months after the surgery to allow my uterus to completly heal so that is why i'm shooting for February. Guest guest
The fundus is the upper portion of the uterus. This diagram shows where the uterine fundus is located: http://www.fibroids.net/html/anatomy.htm Cheryl At 08:46 AM 1/25/2004 -0800, you wrote: >What is a fundas? > >Natnice wrote: Hi kepsmiln2004, I have neer been pregnant in my life and asked my Dr often why? This would be one reason why a woman who had UAE could not get pregnant following it but it's an uncommon occurance. Another reason why a woman who had an embolization might not be able to carry a pregnancy to term would be if the uterine blood vessels did not reopen sufficiently (recannalize) a few months after the procedure, as they usually do. In this case, the endometrium, the blood-rich layer which provides the growing fetus with all its nutrients, would not be getting enough blood to perform that task and eventually the woman would have a miscarriage. At this point, I don't believe we have any reliable information on when this recannalization could fail, in what women, under what circumstances. This is the main reason why docs warn women who wish to become pregnant that they would be better off with a myomectomy.
