Guest guest
I just wanted to share some exciting news. My dad is a pharm. rep. in Indiana and he showed my article to one of his doc's that he calls on. The doctor was really impressed and asked if I would be willing to come over to ville, IN and teach the residents at St. 's Hospital about mitochondrial disease. He said they would provide my lunch if I would do a presentation and question and answer session. I feel so honored that this doc. would ask me to do this, but I don't know that it's possible for me to actually be able to make the trip there and do a presentation. I would like to make up some sort of presentation maybe a powerpoint and then video myself?? Any ideas? I would also be willing to give out my e/mail address for the residents to ask me questions. Thanks!

Guest guest
, This is wonderful and having done this a few times now - I may be able to offer you some advice but you need to do what you feel comfortable with. Prepare handouts... Get some from the UMDF or off the website. You can take these handouts and use them to help you describe the disease and it's affects. A list of website links to anything that points the way to Mito are extremely helpful. If you need help with this - I'll help you privately. Then...at the meeting.. just tell your story. They will be more touched by personal experience than anything and will very likely ask questions that will be easy to answer. Don't give out your e mail address unless you are really willing to spend time with them on this. You can give them the link to and I suspect the mito list too. It would give each group the opportunity to share experiences too and broaden their knowledge base. I suspect you are going to do a wonderful job. Alice I just wanted to share some exciting news. Guest guest
, This is great news. You certainly are an advocate and an inspiration to us all. I have never done a talk for residents, but doing it for some college classes, I have to agree with Alice in just telling your story. Then do a question and answer session. This sort of makes them want to learn about mito. If you feel you can't travel, that is so understandable. There might be a way to video tape yourself, or do you have access in ICN networks? That way they would be able to do it from a location close to you and they could ask questions and you would "be there" from the television and could answer them on the spot. Just a few ideas. They may not be to helpful. I am glad that your article is getting awareness out! Smiles, a On Wed, 17 Mar 2004 12:01:53 EST LILQT4U1984@... writes: I just wanted to share some exciting news. Guest guest
Congrats ! You've already been given some great ideas by others and I guess my only addition would be that if you do a live teleconferencing situation make sure you have it taped so they can show future residents. It's obviously an awesome opportunity to share and make residents understand disease in general on a more personal level. I had a 4th year med student who followed my case while I was in the hospital recently. I made sure to tell her that I appreciated her interest and thoroughness in asking a million questions. It was also a chance to let her know that a good deal of my clinical history was incorrectly documented by " hurried " residents and that the attendings frequently went along with what the residents recited. This lead to poor and flat out wrong information in my permanent records. I requested that she continue to try and take accurate notes when doing her residency. It doesn't pay to hurry through a case and not get any info right. I hope you can convey that message as well. Mito patients need time to explain their many symptoms or they will continue to be overlooked. Best of luck, bug
