Fibroids and scared...long

I was in the ER Tuesday for 6 hours due to very very heavy bleeding, I

called my doctor in tears and near hysterical and she said get to the ER if

it is that heavy. I waited till I thought it had slowed down some, yes,

stupid I know but I was scared. When I got there and eventually in back,

the ER doc checked me out and wasn't sure what was wrong, but said he

believed I had a piece of my fibroid protruding from my cervix.

He called the on call OB//GYN doctors who came down an hour or so later.

They took a look then began to try to " pull " the protruding tissue through

my cervix, was uncomfortable and a bit painful. Thankfully it didn't work so

she did a biopsy of some of the tissue. Then they put in a consult for me to

go see another OB/GYN doc the next day and sent me on my way. My hemocryt

btw was 29, so I had a low iron content.

After some arguing with a receptionist on the phone about having to wait, I

saw him yesterday and he did his own exam, said that yes, I did have what

looked to be a prolapsed fibroid that some of it was protruding from my

cervix and I really did have to get it removed by taking a small metal lasso

and cauterizing the stock. He said that if the doc in the ER had been

successful about getting that fibroid without first knowing how large the

stalk was or where it was attached, I could of bled out or been rushed up to

the surgery room for a emergency hysterectomy. I caught myself fighting

back tears of panic as I had asked her several times if that would be a

concern and she said no.

So, we set a date for me to go in to surgery on the 11th of February and I

was given a shot of Luprion (sp?) this morning as we want to stop the

bleeding and give my body this 3 weeks to replentish before I go under. I

also need to go pick up birth control pills to take as well.

As I said, I am scared about all of this. I hate being put under, though it

is better for me as I get very anxious before going under. I fight coming

out of the anesthesia as I hate to feel out of control and usually get sick

to my stomach afterwards and will throw up for a day or two. My husband and

my aunt say that I should just get a vaginal hysterectomy and get it over

with instead of being possibly faced with this further down the road. I want

to talk to the doctor as he said after he gets this fibroid out he will take

a scope and look at my uterus to see what all is going on.

Anyone else had something like this happen? What were your concerns?

Questions you asked the doctor before hand? How did you feel? Thanks for

letting me vent.

Cari

" I've dealt with my ghosts and

I've faced all my demons,

Finally content with a past I regret.

I've found you find strength

In your moments of weakness,

For once I'm at peace with myself.

I've been burdened with blame,

Trapped in the past for too long...

I'm moving on. "

Bleeding like that is very frightening and more than

one woman here went to the ER in fear of bleeding out.

You did what you thought was right and as for the

idiot Doctor...tell him what he did was wrong. Tell

the hospital what he did was wrong.

Lupron did not work for me. Have you asked about

Megace. This worked great other than giving me a

headache but it really controlled my bleeding when I

took it every 12 hours. Megace is an estrogen

inhibitor designed for the women with cancer to

prevent reoccurence.

Good Luck

Honey don't be scared, I was terrified and was a complete basket case.

never had been sick with anything so i let myself go when I went to have

spoting between periods and then the bleeding was lasting longer and longer

and getting heavier then it cam toa point I had to go to the er and that was

the day that changed my life..I had been told years ago I had fibroids so I

thought I could deal with this myself without a doc well I almose bleed to

death and after they got the bleeding stoped they ran all kinds of test and

told me I never had fibroids so off to surgery I went I had severe endo was

everywhere inside me my bowels had stuck to my ovary and that is what they

were picking up on the ultra sound and had me scared half out of my mind.

but all turned out well .going to sleep was nothing they give you somthing

to calm you down and you don't care what they do to you then .But I am so

glad that I went throughw ith mine I don't have to worry about that heavy

bleding anymore and that is such a relief I got my life back after not

having one for ten years and I would do it again....so don't worry so much

get that thing out of there so you can go on with your life...god bless..

All the best for your treatments and getting through this. It's

shocking that the doctor risked harm through what sounds (from what

the gyn said) like insufficient knowledge and that the receptionist

impeded you seeing the gynaecologist.

There's been some recent handy postings on smartgroups UK on anaemia

(See address in a recent post this month here or most links). There

was also something about internal biopsies that other women looking

into biopsies would find revealing somewhere on the current top page

of threads there.

I found you can look up a brand of tablets on the internet and it

may well come up, being aware that some things that sound right are

a similar named product for a different use.

The next time you see the gynaecologist, ask him/her if you can

contact them again directly and by what method they prefer, as you

are very worried and especially in the light of what of the other

doctors' potentially harmful inappropriate approach.

To help iron absorption, have something vitamin C rich, such as

fruit juice and NOT tea with meals (because of the tannin). Dark

green veg and red meat (If too much of it doesn't aggravate your

symptoms) are good. Fruit and veg generally is good and so are

fortified cereals. Phytic acid in bran and brown rice can also

inhibit iron absorption, I read, but obviously get advice on these

sorts of things and have a balanced varied complete diet.

There's some web sites on anaemea.

<I fight coming out of the anesthesia as I hate to feel out of

control and usually get sick to my stomach afterwards and will throw

up for a day or two.>

Chat to the anaesthetist/doctor/nurse/gyn/ or all of these about

this, in case they can take it into account and try a different

medication/approach for you. Ask about avoiding nausea. I had no

nausea or drowsiness and it may be something they can adjust and

correct.

<My husband and my aunt say that I should just get a vaginal

hysterectomy and get it over>

It's not their body or decision. That's not to say you shouldn't

hear out other people's advice and experiences (Sometimes laymen

talk a lot more sense than professionals), but it's your call and

you may possibly have more knowledge than your family, or different

attitudes generally on the subject of the body, health or

healthcare. The best people to take advice from are the

gynaecologists and from the experiences of this forum, second

opinions are worth consideration for patients who have reservations

about what they've been told.

I guess you can't really make any decision until the situation

inside you has been assessed. What do YOU want, ideally, if

circumstances are right?

Ask for an appointment at a less hectic, less pressured time and for

a longer appointment if they do them. I recently found first thing

on a monday with the GP to be a busy time. Have your questions pre-

prepared in order of priority. Assume nothing as I've been quite

taken aback about some things I'd made assumptions about what they

do and don't do.

Good luck Cari!

Hi Cari,

I can certainly understand why you are scared. I was really scared to go under

too having never had any surgeries but I was in a lot of discomfort from the

fibroids and knew from researching that if I wanted my energy and life back that

I had to just do it. I was very anemic and could never plan anything because

some days I had energy and some days I woke up exhausted. The worst part for me

was the anticipation. What helped me was reading the archived stories and

talking about my fears. When I actually got to the hospital the day of surgery

I was still a little scared but they gave me something in my iv to calm me and

once I was in the OR they put me out right away. I awoke and wasn't sick at all.

My surgery was at 230 and I was back in my hospital room wide awake at 4:30

talking until 10:00 at night. Everyone handles drugs differently and maybe it

would be good to find out what you had before and see if they can do something

different this time. I understand some drugs do cause more nausea.

Good luck to you and try not to worry too much....it will get better!

You mentioned you were on megace. I

take megace also.Been on it for eight months I don't have periods but I do have

daily bleeding due to fibroid pressing on the lining of uterus. Its not much

bleeding but I do have to wear protection everyday.

Just wondering if this has happened to you. It was just around christmas I had

some cramping. That was normal I have cramping just about everyday, but I also

had bloating and fullness a couple of days later I passed some clots the next

day the same thing and than came the gusher. I gushed for six hours. I had a

earlier incident in Aug the same thing. I can't figure out why this happened. I

wondered if this had happened to you while on megace?

This is helpful. I would talk to a nurse as well. I was getting MRIs

as part of fibroid study. When they injected the dye I was

overwhelmed with nausea. I asked a nurse about this and she said she

gets the complaint a lot and the next time ask for a slow push vs. a

fast push. I know nothing about anesthia, but am also going to find

out on March 9. I have the same fears. i am someone who has refused

to have my wisdom teeth pulled because of a bad reaction I had to a

local once. However, I think the more questions asked the better the

fears can be addressed.

I just keep repeating to myself - normal period, normal life over and

over again. I can't do anything that requires me to be away from a

toilet for more than hour once a month and I have had it with that.
