Hi Liz,

Taking 325mg of Ferrous Sulfate (FS) when you're anemic is not harmful.

When I had low hemoglobin a few weeks ago post-surgery my doctor put me on

1300mg of FS a day. It really boosted my blood work fast. My post surgical

hemoglobin was 9.0, then I had lots of post surgery bleeding a week after

the test. I felt quite anemic, but took the 1300mg of iron every day, and

when I went back two weeks later my hemoglobin was up to 11.5! I was

totally surprised.

With dietetic training in college, I was a bit concerned that taking that

much iron would be toxic. But since my bone marrow needed it for building

new red blood cells, it only helped my health instead of hindering it.

I am now close to being a borderline anemic (12.0) and am still taking 650mg

a day on my doctor's request. My hubby and I are trying for a baby so as

soon as a pregnancy occurs, I will drop my dosage of iron.

Even though your box says that each pill is only 65mg, that usually means

that is what is absorbed into your system. The 325mg of ferrous sulfate is

what is contained in each pill, but you will not absorb the entire amount.

Ferrous sulfate is not as easy to digest and absorb as other iron

supplements. But it is the chepest to buy and easiest to take. Be sure to

take your iron pills with ascorbic acid (vitamin C.) Orange juice,

lemonade, vitamin C tablets, a grapefruit, all of these are good to eat when

you take your iron. Try and avoid taking your iron pills with something

calcium rich such as milk or any dairy products. Calcium can interfer with

iron absorption.

Good luck, and I hope you feel more energetic soon!

:)Sonja
