New Hearing Loss

Well, I have now entered the hearing loss " twilight zone " .

I went and had a hearing test yesterday as I have noticed a ringing and

noise in my good ear on the left. I am also saying " what? " more.....I do

have a loss. It isn't loudness that I need but clarity...so my family has

to quit yelling at me...hahahaha!!!

My doctor has recommended a hearing aid for now so am trying to decide

between 2. One is the Songbird, disposal and the other is a more expensive

version that goes over my ear in the back. Anyone wearing either of these

and what is your opinion???? She has given me an application for help on the

2nd as they cost anywhere from $800 to $3000!!! She let me try an aid and I

could not believe the difference!! I could even hear myself better, which

is scary..LOL!

On my next MRI they will have to look closer for an AN, which won't be until

Feb/March.

In my right ear..the deaf one...she hears a pumping and said it could be my

jugular, and I do have a tumor next to it. Will see a doctor on Jan 15 to

check it out and see if it is growing and interfering with my jugular.

Any suggestions or help would be most welcome. I am not afraid to say I am

a little scared, although I do know that in some cases, caught in time

hearing can be salvaged. Hopefully, no tumor, but just age....and a hearing

aid will solve the problem.

After 15 years, I thought..I am home free..never would happen to me...what

an eye opener. Maybe I got too cocky! LOL!

Slighty depressed,

Carol

Carol, I am wearing Phonak behind the ear digital hearing aids in both ears.

Cost about $5k for the set and that includes the remote comtrol. These are

dual microphone on each hearing aid. When I am in more crowded situations I

can shut off the rear microphones on then and just pick up what is directly

in front of me. It really makes a difference.

BEANS here, I was just to dinner with a minister friend of mine. We played a

little cards before and I can understand every word he says. Now we are

ready to go eat???? The place is a small town restraunt, the folks all 60 or

over many in the 70 to 80 bracket. They talk on & on endlessy. Now comes my

part. I'm deaf the tralk is on, WHAT? WHERE? WHO? HOW??? gooc question. I

still haven't the faintest cule but the meal was enjoyable. I had no need to

say something stupid I just nodded and said yes or no as to what I thought

was approperate. Which is the land of zombies. They didn't have a clue as to

me not getting the message.

Being deaf is not all that bad. I still don't know what was said but it sure

was good to add 2cents and not get caught.WOW!!!!!! what a lunch.

Good Morning!!

Wide awake at 3:30am. Thought this would be a good time to catch up on my mail. Everyone else is sleeping!!

Thanks . I took a signing class in October and my 6 yo granddaughter is having fun helping me practice, in fact, if you ask her right now what she wants to do when she grows up..she wants to teach signing, but I am sure that will change. LOL.... For so long, I was going to take the class and didn't. Kind of karma I guess that I finally did this year. Wierd. But I will always maintain that God fills my needs. They are having a class in January again if enough people sign up and plan to take that too. It is just a repeat of the first, but I am sure I will always be able to use the practice. No one else in my family has shown any interest at this point.

My neurologist put in for an MRI for me. Hopefully, I can get it done before the 15th of Jan..but will see. Then I will know if anything has decided to invade "my hearing space."

You have all been very kind and patient with me. Everything has gotten a bit overwhelming this past couple of months and hearing this new news was something I certainly DID NOT want to deal with right now.

Thanks for being there......

Carol

Re: New Hearing Loss (bluffing)-Jennette

Hi Carol,

I am like you deaf in my right ear I am however fortunate at present that my left ear is not affected as yet. I understand your fear and frustration of losing your hearing as it was one of the things that frightened me the most when i was first diagnosed 4 years ago. Ofcourse, my fear at present is far less acute than your own as at my left ear is behaving itself.

One thing i did that may help you is i attended deaf awareness classes with my partner and signing classes. The deaf awareness bit on its own was worth having. I think hearing the same information from someone else about how best to help clear communication can sometimes help. Alternativly is there someone 'NF2 councellor' 'Social Worker for the Deaf' that could come and explain the situation to your family??-perhaps that may help.

On a personal level I have tried to make tentative links with the deaf community and trained to become a teacher of the deaf so i can still work if/when i lose my hearing.

i hope some of these ideas help. we are allowed to be cross and frustrated. It is annoying when a tiny amount of consideration on someone elses behalf can make a huge difference.

yours

julie

Thank-you Olivia....

Re: New Hearing Loss

Hi CarolIt's so scary when your hearing is compromised. I sure hope a hearing aid does work for you. I know what you mean about it not being loudness but clarity, when someone tries to speak up for me most of the time it hurts my ear like nails on a chalkboard. I'll pray for you and hope it turns out ok, Olivia
