CONSIDER TRYING ACTUAL TRYPTOPHANE INSTEAD OF 5-HTP.

The 5HTP is what they came up with after trypothane got banned becasue of a

bad batch and they outlawed it for a number of years.

If I recall correctly tha 5HTP is 5% of the potency of l-tryptophane.

BIOGENESIS and ANTIAGING bopth carry it I beleive, as well as a few other

online ssites.

You also need to take it at night and make sure you have it with a little

bit of sugary stuff to assist it accross the blood/brain barrier....like a

litle bit of juice.

I thought trytophan was taken off the shelves by the FDA years ago. I used to

take it all the time as an alternative to tranquilizers until they stopped

selling it because there was a scare that it was killing people. Yeah right! The

drs & pharms. wanted to sell their own tranquilizers in pill form so away it

went.

I'm taking SAMe now which is just great for a mood altering feeling of

well-being.

5HTP can be quite strong. One thing you might notice is you

can feel chilly after taking it. From my own experience,

start low and work up. Or if you don't mind shocking yourself

you can start around the middle and work down as needed.

The numbers in the literature are quite high and many people

won't need anywhere near that amount. I break open a 50 mg

capsule and use about 10-15 mg with melatonin at night. I'm post

meno age 54. I wouldn't use any more 5HTP than necessary as it

can act like SSRIs in the sense of flooding the system, and then

the body has to protect itself by shutting off receptors, sometimes

permanently. Nothing to mess around with IMO. Proceed slowly.

I think the coldness is related to some slowing of metabolic

processes, so there could be weight gain as well as some appetite

loss, which could cancel each other out LOL!

Yes..it was. I could not even get it from any pharmacy in California,

Arizona, Utah, Nevada or Colorado a couple of years ago even though I had a

valid prescription for it.

You can now get in online without a prescription of yout own...in fact, mine

jsut arrived yesterday (also got married yesterday)

Yes. Great stuff. Wish we could afford all f those wonderful little goodies!

By the way, how are you doing, Caroline?

I have had some rough days form shear exhaustion and not having my DMSA for

the mercury. (Moed and living down in California now - not too far from you,

actually)

Here's the dumb part about that. Tryptophan is in pork, milk, turkey, and

some other stuff, but isn't allowed on the grocery or OTC shelves. But

L-Tryptophan is, though. It's one of the stupidest moves I've ever seen the

FDA make, and I've seen them make some dumb ones. Not so dumb, though, but

violates our rights as Americans, as their reasoning was to help make their

strange bedfellows (big pharma) richer, as they mostly have a lot of stock

in these companies. Don't think that they don't carry these stocks.

They're getting rich off of them also. Pharma stocks are some of the best

there are, because they're doing so well off of the American public.

(et al),

Do you know what the difference between tryptophane and L-tryptophane is?

I was always thinking I was getting one and the same....

ly I don't think there is any difference. They're both the same amino acid,

aren't they? Same with Glutamine or L-glutamine & all the others sold separately

with or without the " L " .

Since I've had difficulty sleeping my whole life, I was devastated when they

took Tryptophan off the market. I can remember using it back in the 1980's

before it was taken off the market. It worked a little.

You know. kind of an off shoot here, but with how little sleep I actually get,

I should weigh very little. Just a thought.

Well, I'll just throw this out there, in case anyone can benefit from

it. When I first realized I was getting, well, stupid, but before I

figured out why, I tried some of the so-called " smart drugs " . They

didn't make me smart (unless being smart feels like a headache), but I

did find one that helps me sleep. It's called " phenibut " (or sometimes

" gabatropin " ), and you can read about it/buy it at www.bulknutrition.com

.. They sell it as a powder, and it mixes easily with water, but WOW

what a taste. I suspect that's where the " -but " part of its name comes

from. You can buy it already encapsulated lots of places, but it's more

money that way.

I find that it doesn't *make* me feel sleepy, but once I get to sleep I

stay that way. Skipping the 3AM full-afterburner anxiety wakeup call is

well worth gagging down 1/4 tsp of the stuff (which works out to about

600mg, a fairly low dose). I can wake up if I need to (if my daughter

has nightmares, for example), and I'm not groggy the next day like with

melatonin (groggy is not something anyone on this list needs more of).

There are many phenibut articles out there, and they say it has all

kinds of other properties, like improving mental acuity, enhancing

concentration and awareness, etc. As much as we would all like to have

those things, I have to tell you that, as far as I can tell, that's all

crap. But maybe a good night's sleep will do some of those things by

itself. The articles also say you build up a tolerance to it, but I

haven't found that to be the case either. Maybe taking it only once a

day, and at a low dose, prevents that.

The usual disclaimers -- I'm not affiliated with bulknutrition.com or

any other place that sells the stuff. If you try it, read about it

first and make your own decisions. I'm not a doctor (you can write your

own joke about doctors and smart drugs here).

I don't know. If I'm sleeping, I'm not snacking... :-)

Yes, and in most cases, the " legal " version is going to be the metabolite or

precursor to the same thing, which makes it no different than the original.

It's a precursor to Serotonin, and, of course, we want to be able to sell

lots of Serotonin-promoting antidepressants for zillions of $$s, so we don't

want anything as good as that competing with the sales of those.

Nope, it is just the opposite! When you don't get enough rest, and the

brain can't go to sleep regularly, for a good amt of time, the brain is

starved for sugar. Therefore, it will begin to go into a " savings account "

mode and will start putting everything you eat into storage, i.e., fat. Lot

of people don't know this. So, usually, the less sleep you get, the heavier

you will eventually get, especially since the body senses this as a threat

to your health. Then it starts going Save, Save, Save that calorie, I may

need it later. She's not giving me enough to work on! This is why many

hypos gain weight or at least gain weight just around the middle, if they

don't gain it everywhere. The body has gone into a hybernation mode because

it is threatened from existence in a normal way.
