Greetings, Fellow Fibroidiennes-

Yes, 'tis I - yet again (and I hope I haven't exceeded my 3-post daily

maximum).

I've heard some of you complaining about the pain from the IV being worse

than the abdominal pain post-op...So, I'm wondering what's the consensus on the

BEST site to request that your IV be inserted???

Some of you may remember my " colonoscopy from hell " several months ago. I

had that IV in the back of my hand and it was AWFUL. So for me, that's out!

Hi Elana,

I had a salivary gland tumor removed from my neck in March of this year and a

nurse put the IV in my right hand very crudely (surgery was on my left side.)

I could see the puncture site for months, I thought it would never go away.

The anethetist injected some drugs into my hand line before I went under and I

jumped - he looked so wounded looking like he had hurt me. (Btw, he was an

amazing anethetist - I hope I can request him for my myomectomy.) I managed to

tell him it wasn't his fault, it was the way the IV was inserted. So I think

next time, I may request the IV elsewhere - you can do this as long as the IV

lines don't interfere with the location of your surgery but with a myo I don't

think it matters where. What about the inner elbow? But that sounds like it

could be painful too because of the flexing involved.

I think the " best place " really is an individual decision. For me, the back

of the hand works best. I think sometimes your comfort level just depends

on how well the IV was inserted. The worst place is an area that will be

flexed a lot, such as the inside of your wrist.
