cost of helmet

A few people were asking how much the helmets are. We have a

starband. Hanger charged our insurance company BCBS of CA $2500 for

the band. Our ins. is covering 80% -THANK GOD!. If our ins. would

not have cover it Hanger was charging us $1700. They charge more to

the insurance companies than to individuals. Good Luck with you

insurance- ours paid right away we did not have to go through the

appeal process.

Our DOC Band in Phx cost $3000 and our ins did not cover it...we paid for it up in front and got a 10% discount...Big Woop...I appealed to UHC and they denied it...again...don't know if I'm up to another fight...My son had it for 10 weeks and it's amazing how it works...would I do it again for $3000? Yes, it's very expensive but the price for a symmetrical, round head is priceless....

That is great to know it was worth it! With the Ped. discouring the band you

are afraid that it won't work and not be worth the fustration for your child or

the cost. I appreciate your info. It helps confirm my decision to go forward

with trying the DOC band.

I can't explain it either. Ours is $1800 (we pay 20%). It sounds crazy

to me - it is just a piece of plastic! It is custom made though, so

that must be part of it.

Speaking of cost of helmets... has anyone had to get a second helmet and pay that hefty price all over again?

I'm concerned... my son is almost 9 months old and still isn't even close to sitting up or crawling... so I'm concerned about relapse... plus, he sleeps on his back because he sleeps with legs braces for his clubbed feet....... ANY ADVICE?!

According to the PT he has about three weeks before he's completely outgrown this helmet.

there are many on here that have had 2 but many have posted the statistic being low for the need of a 2nd, I actually know someone who needed FOUR though but he had very persistant tort. my sons was moderate to severe and still only needed 1.

Is it standard to have to repay the whole amount each time?

ugh....... his head is still seriously flat at the base, it's more 'even' on both sides, whereas before it was totally lopsided AND flat. I'm sure it is partly because he's developmentally delayed in gross motor skills... I talked with the PT and she said she's pretty concerned about him relapsing because of that as well.

Yes, they do charge the full amount again for a second one. Regression only happens about 1% of the time and at least at Cranial Tech, a second band is only necessary about 14.1% of the time. I forget the percentage for needing a 3rd band, but I think it's about 2% or somewhere around there.Jake-22m (tort resolved/rt plagio/DOCBand #2 6 weeks)Jordan-4> >> > Why do these helmets cost so much. I think though that with relapse the advantage is also that yuo know now so are more apt to take preventive measures. I am not sure what kind of band you have but I know when Hanger told us we would see minimal if any improvement with his ears we asked CT about it. It was explained to us that the ear improvement correlates with skull base improvement. The base of the skull is smaller bones so the improvement is harder and slower to get. We were told they couldnt speak of the Hanger band b/c they didnt have experience with it but that we would absolutely see results with teh docband in that area. Sure enough we saw improvement in forehead and eyes first, then the top of his head and we started to worry as it wasnt until the last few weeks that we saw improvement in his skull base and ears. It worried us b/c his ears were our biggets concern b/c they were seriously assymetric. But his skull base measurements still went from 15 mm assymetry down to 6 mm assymetry which is better than they estimated would happen
