Ami,

I am sorry for all the extra pain you have been going thru. Sounds

like they have finally found out what the problem is and you have

some hope of relief. Dont worry about the length. You are helping

us all by sharing your story. It will help someone who is having

the same types of symptoms, know that they are not alone in this

complication. Congrats on the weight loss!!!

I'm really sorry about what you're going through. It's really scarey.

I just had quite an experience myself. I went in for my surgery on Wednesday

morning, 7/30 for a lap rny, and when the surgeon got in there he didn't like

the way my liver looked and stopped the surgery. We knew my liver enzymes were

slightly elevated. Also, I was checked for Hepatitis a couple of times after

these liver enzymes came back and the tests were negative. So, now I have to

go to a liver specialist to check into this. I was sick after the partial

procedure, very nausiated. I have to go to my PCP tomorrow for a liver

specialist referral and then see the surgeon again next thursday. I do believe

hwoever, that I will be able to get this straightened out and get on with the

surgery a few weeks/months down the line. My surgeon was concerned about doing

the surgery and the effects a rapid weight loss might have on my liver so he is

being very cautious. (I guess, sigh!!!) I feel like I've been through a washing

machine cycle!!!

Do you know of anyone who has gone through this type of a problem?

You take care of yourself. This stuff can get awfully nasty can't it?

LoriB

Rehospitalization - its long, sorry!

Hi everyone,

I have certainly not had the best of luck with this surgery - Im sure that

much is obvious. When I had the blockage last week, one of the nurses that

took

care of me in our local ER told me that she had the RNY 3 years ago and just

thought it was the best thing ever and never had any trouble. It greatly

disturbed me that she was still about 70 or so lbs over weight. Maybe time

has

faded her memory of how greatly horrifying it is in the beginning? Who knows.

On Monday night around 7:30 we sat down to dinner. I had a few bites of

mashed potatoes and a bite of very flaky Orange Roughy. After a hour of

torture I

threw it up. Usually if I throw up, I feel better. But not this time - just

like last week. So I was certain I was blocked again. I was so pissed! I

ate a very tiny amount and only ate foods that are on the list for me to eat.

At least last week I deserved it for eating something I wasnt suppose to

(filet minon), but this week I was completely innocent.

I was in some discomfort, but not horrible pain, so I just called my surgeon.

He recommended that I try and drink some water. If I could hold it down,

then I could wait until morning and then come see him to get scoped. If I

threw

that up too or if I started having those horrific chest pains (which are

actually esophogeal spasms, but feel like a hot knife through the chest and

into

the back), then to call him back. So I took two tiny sips of water - it was

agony and I thought I was going to throw it up, but I never did. I ended up

propped up on the couch waiting for either the nausea and stomach pain to

subside

or for the chest pain to start with mom and Trav's eyes bearing down on me.

If it all went away then we could go to bed. If the chest pain started we

could call the doc again.

I felt the chest pain coming and I started crying - not because it hurt so

much initially, but because I knew how much worse it was going to get.

Its like when I was in labor and I felt a contraction coming - the first part

of the contraction isnt excruciating, but you know its coming and you start to

panic. This pain is almost worse than labor because it makes you feel like

you cant breathe and that only adds to the panic.

Trav called the surgeon with me carrying on in the background. The surgeon

told him to get me to the ER and they would scope me. When Trav reminded him

that we were an hour & a half away, he advised us to stop at our local ER to

get

something for pain before the drive.

It was decided that mom would take me for various reasons. We went to the ER

in our town and they made me suffer for what seemed like an eternity before

finally giving me something for pain and letting me go. The ride to the city

wasnt exactly comfortable - I was still hurting but it was bearable.

We didnt have to wait long once we got to the city. They took us right back

and I got an IV started and so more pain medicine (which since it was IV

rather than IM, hit me like a ton of bricks). I think they then took me for

some

xrays. I remember going somewhere, but I dont remember the destination. I

remember coming back to my ER room and the nurse drawing some blood on me.

After

a bit, she came back and told us I was being admitted and as soon as they got

a call from upstairs with which bed I was going to, they would send me up. I

thought it was strange that I was being admitted. When I had talked to the

surgeon the first time (before the chest pain had started) I was told that if

I

had to come up there, I would either be scoped that night, or they would keep

me in the ER, keep my pain controlled and scope me first thing in the

morning. But thats not what happened. Now that my mind is clearer, I have to

wonder

if my admission had something to do with my lab work.

We were taken upstairs to the same floor that I had been on after my surgery.

By then it was after midnight, so we were into Tuesday. I thought I would

be scoped that morning, but I wasnt. It confused me, but I was too bumfuzzled

on medications to ask. Later that morning, they did take me to xray for a

barium swallow (GROSS!) and I was told by the radiologist that everything

seemed

to be emptying ok. It aggravated me - I was afraid they werent going to

scope me after all and I felt like if what I had eaten had blocked me, then

there

was a problem somewhere, and they needed to figure it out.

Later on the GI doc came and talked to us. He told us that he planned on

scoping me the next morning (Wednesday). He also said that there was a chance

that I could end up having to be cut open because of the risk of rupturing the

outlet from my stomach. When he had dilated it before, it was a 32 french

(unit of measurement) and he stretched it to a 39. He said that he had spoken

with my surgeon who said it needed to be a 60 french. I could tell from the

pictures that he had given me last week, that he had ruptured it a little bit

with

just that amount of stretching because of the blood and even some staples in

the pictures.

So I had the scope this morning. He was able to stretch me to a 57 french

without rupturing me (they made me drink some gastrograffin to check for leaks

-

yucky!) so I didnt have to have a real surgery. Scary thing is though that

he told me in the week since he had stretched me, my outlet had shrunk to a 28

french - which is even smaller than it started out at last week - and only

half as big as it needed to be - no wonder that food got stuck!

I spent the rest of the day in the hospital, proving that I could drink

liquids and he came and released me at around 6:30 tonight.

I have to go back up next week (and the next few weeks after that) to get

rescoped and restretched. Eventually he will cut it down to ever two weeks

then

every month, then every three months, if I continue to need it. Who knows -

maybe this stretch will hold. The only good news - my weights was 221, so I am

officially down 40 lbs. I will keep you updated!

Hi Melody :)

It partially depends on if you will be having proximal or distal

surgery. If distal, then your chances of losing that much the first

year is greater. But actually, it is more 2/3 of your excess body

weight. So if a healthy weight is 200 for you (as an example only),

then you'd be 250 lbs overweight and 2/3 of that would be about 165

lbs which is what you could expect to lose the first year.

Hope this helps :)
