I have never read any reference to the loss of sense of smell with hypo but I

also suffer from it. I can smell alot more things now, but some days, still not

that well. Of course any doctor I mention this to tells me mine is from smoking,

but as it comes & goes and my smoking doesn't, I don't think so.

Gordon Skinner in his book Diagnosis and Management of Hypothyroidism says

" Other patients lose their sense of smell and/or tasteand like other senses

describe hallucinatory phenomena where water tastes sweet or food metallic;

these features disappear following thyroid replacement. "

>>where water tastes sweet or food metallic<<

Well water tastes BITTER to me! LOL I sure wish I would start liking water

again. It is very hard to drink enough liquids when you can't stand the taste of

water.

Oh dear, that's not really funny. I smoke too though, ab out 3-4 cigs per day

for about 50 years. Not a lot every day but a huge amount over time. I hope to

be able to quit soon, haven't had any luck with that the many times I've tried

so far tho. But it's super bad for us to smoke. Also very bad for the thyroid

located in the neck which gets suffocated & restricted from the smoking every

time we light up. Scarey to think about but still apparently not enough

incentive to make me quit forever. Oh well, I'll keep trying.

Why thank ya very much. I smoke, prolly too much. When I die they will have

to throw a carton of cigarettes in my casket with me. LOL LOL

Is loss of sense of smell a symptom?

My son can't smell anything anymore - nothing at all.

A while back I suspected that he had thyroid problems....

hmmmm...

yea..that's been a strange one for me...because i hadn't smelled stuff for

decades. and now sometimes, I don't know what I'm smelling (can't recognize it

because I never smelled it before)....and have to ask my husband....is that

the soup that I smell? is that your cologne I smell? etc. It's been a really

interesting experience.

Zinc deficiency can cause the loss of the sense of smell also. I have the

same problem, but I also have swollen nasal passages somewhat.
