Guest guest
, most PLS'er gain weight but don't know about weight loss and anti depressants. I have gone on an anti depressant (zoloft) but I didn't like it, made me stay awake and didn't help much with the crying episodes. I think we tend not to get hungry because we are not activate enough. Sometimes I get going doing things around the house and I forget to eat. Eat more little meals during the day 5 or 6 times a day is what I've heard. I would do what ever your doctor says. We do have a dietitian who is a PLS'er maybe she will have more suggests. How about those nutritional drinks have you tried that.....................These anti depressants work different on some people so just trend softly with it..................Flora
Guest guest
Hey Everybody, The Dr put me on anti-depresants back in March to help with emotional instability(I think thats the name for it)but lately have been depressed and feeling insecure.Wife called Drs office and they asked for my weight also. They are calling in a new perscription for me but I have lost 9 lbs since last visit to Emory. They didnt like that at all. They said people with PLS burn more calories to get muscles moving than normal people.First Ive ever heard of it.They want me to eat more protien like eggs and pnut butter.Does anyone else have this problem and what do you have any other suggestions on what to eat?I have always been skinny and ussually eat alot but dont eat much now because I dont get hungry.I have been tired alot more lately and have started falling more and wife says shes noticed my walking getting worse.I hope Im not ready for a wheelchair and feeding tube.If anyone has any suggestions please help. Guest guest
, Of course, the Dietitian has some suggestions. First, I don't agree that you are burning more calories to 'get your muscles going'--you are probably burning fewer calories because the amount of exercise you are doing is less. Most likely, you are taking in fewer calories than you need because of your diminished appetite. I think that the easiest way for you to gain some weight is to try eating more frequently. There are many good tasting liquid nutritional supplements available in the grocery store and pharmacy. Ensure Plus is one of the more calorically dense ones (50% higher on calories than Ensure). If cost is an issue, or if you just don't like the Ensure Plus, I can provide you with some recipes for home made concoctions and a list of other ways to add calories to your diet without increasing the quantity of food. E-mail me at my address d.carron@... to give me your mailing address and I'll gladly send you some literature. Why do you mention the feeding tube? Are you having difficulty swallowing? Also, check with your pharmacist and/or doctor about the possibility that the medication is taking away your appetite. Perhaps, a change in prescription is warranted. Many anti-depressants actually increase your appetite. If you want to give me the name of the med, I can also evaluate it for you. Hoping to hear from you. Really, I do want to help. Guest guest
, my neuro told me not to lose weight also but didn't say why. However, I have not lost but gained a few pounds. I think it is because I am not as active as I use to be. I do find that I am not hungry sometimes (which is a totally new experience for me) so I don't eat. I doubt I get enough protein so I have a bag of raw almonds with me at all times to nibble on. Guest guest
Hey , if you have PLS you shouldn't have to have a feeding tube. I'm on antidepressants also. I just went through a month of deep depression, found out it was the clonozepam I was taking. May want to talk to your Dr. about the Meds your on. Also it wouldn't hurt to look them up on the internet and see if any of them could be contributing to your problems.I just read in a book my chiropractor gave me and it says a lot of people die from the medications they take. My chiro. really thinks he can fix this problem because it has everything to do with the nerve system. I told him to go for it. I must say I am losing weight [so far 20lbs.] and do have more energy. I was 210lbs. down to 190. I weighed 184 lbs before I got sick. Tell your doc to put you on Lexapro. You'll gain weight. Guest guest
That is interesting about the feeding tube. On my last visit my neuro asked me to think about, and put in writing, whether I would want a feeding tube and/or a tracheotomy. The question caught me by surprise but he said it was something I had to think about. What are Bette Jo's limitations with the tube? You said she can still eat with it? I am really confuse about what would be involved. Susieq don-wilson@... wrote:Sorry Bart, but I must take exception to your statement. PLS people certainly could and do need a feeding tube.
