Yes Jeannie....I have occasional bouts where my neck goes very

rigid....followed by real weakness. It can last for an hour...or a few

days. Makes my head bob around a bit!

Jeannie,

I've noticed when I get my hair done or if I sit and hold my neck down

for any length of time that it is hard to lift my neck up again--so

yes I have noticed that!

I do. It is just plain hard to hold my head up a lot of the time.

Hi Jennie:

I have problems with my neck but I just saw a nerosurgeon at

Vanderbilt in Nashville Tn. and he said that my little canal that

carries the fluid from my brain down my spinal cord was closing up when

he compared a mri from march 2003 to a mri that I had done in march

2005 and he said they see alot of that in als and pls people and said

doing surgery would probably make it worse and only if it closed up and

choked the fluid flow off would he even consider doing surgery but it

does feel like a bad neck weakness.I don't know if I helped you any but

they say that is what is causing my neck weakness.

I wouldn't actually call it muscle weakness, but I have severe arthritis in my

neck and it gets stiff and tight and pain radiates into my upper back from my

neck and there are times when my head feels too heavy for my neck. I just found

out this spring that I have such bad arthritis in my neck and I've had problems

with my neck and upper back for years, part of the reason I went to the

wheelchair all the time. Have you ruled out arthritis in your neck? Xrays

showed mine really well.

Hi Jeanne. I posted a similar question back in january but my problem

was more neck pain which most probably orginiated from neck weakness.

I found out I had whiplash which took till now for the pain to

completely go away. I was told by my neuro that it is easy for us to

get whiplash or a " pain in the neck " because we do have a weakness

there. There are 2 great exercises you can do to strengthen your neck.

These helped me with the pain also. Just do a " google " on " neck

strengthening exercises " .

Yes, Jeannie. I have neck muscle weakness and have had even before

other symptoms of PLS appeared (I DO think it's related though). I

noticed at least ten years ago in an exercise class that I couldn't

raise my head up from the floor without using my hands to help, unlike

most others in the class. Also, while watching TV I'll often drop my

head, even when I'm only partly dozing. My husband rarely drops his

head, and if he does it drops backward. I'm now making sure to do neck

exercises as part of my exercise program, hoping that will ward off

disaster!!

Every time I go to the UCSF ALS Research Center for my " evaluation " , neck

pain is always one of the questions. To now, I've always been able to report no

neck pain and hope it stays that way.

Today was my appointment and I'd skipped a couple appointments so hadn't been

in almost 1-1/2 years. I knew I had progressed but I was surprised at how

much less arm strength I had. Also my neck did not have as much strength either

(but now I can't remember if it was when she was pushing it back or pulling

it forward, but I think pushing it back). Also my breathing numbers weren't as

good either. She told me not to be discouraged because it wasn't significant

especially given it had been almost 1-1/2 years but I certainly couldn't

leave their office all smiles. I know I have been lax in some things I could be

doing (like breathing exercises) and trying to take off a few pounds so now I

have a goal to see if I can get those numbers back by the time I go back.
