Guest guest
i used the krylon fusion spray paint for plastics it worked great the second time. the first time it scrapped off the second time we did a clear coat over it and it lasted. we blew up a balloon inside the helmet then taped off the edges this is the first time we painted it after alot had been scrapped off http://birds.lemonyfresh.com/gallery/Simon/simon8_14_06_7 he had had it for awhile at this point this is after it was repainted and had the clear coat on it http://birds.lemonyfresh.com/gallery/Simon/simon9_4_06_5 the spot on the side is from it falling over when the paint was still wet. Guest guest
thanks the hardest part is masking off around the edges its even harder when the helmet is at the end of its use and theres not much foam in it so its really flexable hehe. Guest guest
i just used an acrylic enamel clear coat you can find it most places we picked ours up at autozone. when we went to buy the krylon fusion we went to lowes and home depot first neither of them had it we ended up going to walmart to get it, they have it at autozone too which would of been easier to get it there. Guest guest
Did you use a plastic primer under the paint? I saw in one of the files that that was recommended, and I just want to be sure and get it if it will make the paint stick better. Thanks, > > > > > > My son got his band today. Guest guest
If you use Krylon Fusion, is it permanent? Or can you peel it off and spray on another color when you want to change the color? Also, do you use a sealant on top of it when you're done to prevent peeling and scratching? Thanks! Guest guest
if you dont use a clear coat over the krylon fusion it will scrap off, simon had scrapped alot off it the first time we painted it because we didnt do a clear coat dont know how easy it would be to get off with the clear coat on. i think if you want to paint it it would prolly be better to pick a color and stick with it since it takes awhile to mask off the edges (harder after foam has been shaved out and the band is more flexible) and you have to let it sit for atleast 10 minutes between coats (3 coats of color 2 coats of clear is what we did) then atleast an hour to dry before you put the band back on. the first time we did it was right after we got the band the second time was just before he was done with it prolly about 4 weeks before he was done. Guest guest
One more Q-do you think if we painted the helmet according to what you did, with the clear coat, that if we put stickers on the paint, but under the clear coat, tht they would stay as well as your paint did?? I'm guessing that you did the stickers on top of the clear coat, so that you could change them out, but I don't know that we have the time to mess with changing stickers all the time. Also, does any one have any experience using vinyl decals on the helmet? Thanks so much! > > > > My son got his band today. We are planning to have it painted and have > > bought acrylic paints. Guest guest
they should stay put under the clear coat i put the stickers on top of the clear never changed them out they curled at the edges some but stayed on i dont know if they would of stayed on for the whole 11 weeks though, we repainted and did the clear coat a few weeks before he was done with the band. the first time we did it without the clear coat and had mylar stickers on it and a vinyl pirate flag on the front , the mylars printing rubbed off so he just had shiny mirrors all over but the vinyl pirate flag stayed looking as good as new except for a small line he somehow managed to put in it.
