Guest guest
WLS is the surgical equivalent of antabuse a drug that is used to stop alcoholics from drinking. If you take antabuse and have alcohol in your system you get very sick...kinda like dumping. Most of us needed a medical intervention for our obesity or we would just keep getting larger and larger. It isn't a cure, but it sure helps. I do not consider myself a cured overeater...I still have a 400+ pound brain now in a 200 pound body and sometimes they clash. Every now and then the brain wins, but more often the surgically altered body wins the battle, but it always takes a lot of work. Guest guest
: I agree. I eat for many reasons and generalizing always irritates me. I had a shrink who tried to get me to say that I " choose " to overeat and I " chose " to be obese. I " chose " to fire her because I knew that wasn't the " whole " picture. Maybe sometimes I do. But generalizations are always dangerous. Sometimes, people who are overweight but not candidates for surgery look to me for insight and advice. And after losing all this weight, I still *just do not know.* I was hungrier then than I am now and that's about it. in Austin RNY April 1998 Re: Dr. Phil > In a message dated 4/30/02 7:12:46 PM Eastern Daylight Time, > Graduate-OSSG writes: > > ******************************************** > First of all, this is just my opinion and my experience...YMMV. Guest guest
There is a chemical imbalance occuring in the brain that prevents or inhibits the nerve connection from telling you that you are full. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of it. I saw a Maury show while I was home one day a couple of weeks ago. He had on extremely obese children. One of the girls suffers from this disease and a doctor actually put a name to it. I also ate for a myriad of reasons, but did not suffer from this disease. I think Dr. Phil oversimplifies the obese issue. I believe he is initially correct in his statement about not doing something if we didn't get anything out of it. What he failed to address and probably doesn't have a clue about is the neverending hunger once you become obese. It takes a lot of food to support a 400 pound body and your body ensures that it will get that much food by constantly sending the hunger signal. That constant gnawing hunger is enough to keep you eating all day long even if you don't have other eating disorder issues. To me, that's the connection of obese people losing weight that Dr. Phil totally overlooks. My own wonderful PCP watched me struggle with dieting and health issues as I got bigger and bigger. At almost 400 lbs., I finally admitted to him that no matter what I did the weight would not come off. He was very very honest with me. He told me that my chances of losing the weight at my size were almost nil. That I was too big and past the point of being able to do it myself. That's when we began the wls journey. I'd like to smack the smug Dr. Phil and Miss I'm All That But Still Can't Manage My Weight Oprah for allowing such an oversimplification of a life threatening problem. I may have to break down and write the show. I'm not one to write fan letters, etc. but if we don't voice our opinion on this issue then we are doing a disservice to all of our obese brothers and sisters who are sitting at home today, silently beating themselves up because yesterday " Dr. Phil " told them how incompetent they are. I challenge everyone on all of the WLS groups to write in to the Oprah Show today. You have my permission to pass this along. Maybe thousands of emails from us in one day would make an impression on someone. ===== judy in austin American by birth, Southern by Heritage and Texan by the Grace of God. __________________________________________________

Guest guest
>>> Did you see the way he contradicted himself w/ the 1st couple and second...the first he made her basically feel like she is " choosing " to over eat and should stop.... The second man...he said that he chooses just to spite his wife " thats how men are " >>>> I found the show humorous at some times but it irritated me that the woman was fat and it was her fault and the man was fat but it wasn't really his fault. like you said [above]. I thought this was going to be a woman bashing show until they hit couple 3. I was pretty much convinced that the 3rd woman probably had gastric bypass and was still dealing with those issues of self image that we talk about here all the time. she said she was the same person, yet she said she was different. we think that way until we get a few years out and come to terms with it. she hadn't had the weight off for 2yr. yet. you see yourself as fat person and when you walk down the street and catch a glimpse of someone in a window you don't even know its you some days. anyhow - watching a show like that makes me so proud of my husband for never withdrawing at my heaviest or belittling me like those spouses did and proud of myself for fighting a good fight and coming to terms with who I am and where I'm at. its not easy work. sue [swVA]
Guest guest
> but I also know that something is broken. That signal that says " I'm full " or " I'm satisfied " is just not working. I know this because of a couple of things...first of all, I never felt full or satisfied >>> this strikes a cord with me. I can so vividly remember a day shortly after I gained back my phen-fen weight loss in the fall of '97 after the pills were yanked from the market and I sat in my office and said to a coworker - I just wish I felt full. like when I take diet pills I seem to get that satisfaction and maybe I wouldn't be this fat. there must be a way. I know those diet pills I took over the course of some 30yr. made my head thing my stomach was full - and it worked short term each time setting me up with the most inefficient metabolism know to doctors. and there began my search for some way to make my stomach feel full all the time and let the mind adjust without pills. in looking back and I've done this alot in the last four years - I know my eating was to fill a void. material things seemed to fill it but that of course is very short lived. when I couldn't buy clothes I could buy food. I was a successful dieter losing 50-100 pounds not less than 6x. but keeping it - filling that void deep within me. it took many months of soul searching, reading and talking to come to terms with 'me'. I always tell newbies to take their time healing and do lots of reading - find themselves or the same reasons and patterns of their eating will return a few years down the road. sue [swVA]
