Guest guest
Hi, Cammie. I have been thinking about this acromegaly think a lot this weekend. I actually am a wee bit concerned. I do have a few weird problems along the lines of some of the symptoms. Although, I must tell you, I am prone to med student syndrome. I am not a med student, but everything I read, I am convinced I have--which illustrates the beautiful wisdom of doctors. My question to you is, do you think I could ask my gyn to run the test or should I visit an endocrinologist? I'm afraid I'll have to wait a long time to see an endoconologist and I don't have a general doctor, just a gyn. And I want to know ASAP!!!! What do you think? Thanks, Eileen
Guest guest
I think you don't have to be in a hurry to deal with it, first of all. Yep. I can understand reading about obscure syndromes and " getting " them. I think all of us are that way, to some extent. I think you need a general doctor, first of all. And getting ready for surgery is a good enough reason to make an appointment with one for an exam. You're gonna need an ekg, a chest x-ray and blood work before the surgery, anyhow. Why not get the 30,000-mile check up while you're at it (but do be sure about the time frame, when you're scheduling the tests. Tests had to be done within a week of the surgery, for me). I was the same as you. Had a gyn, an old friend, and went back to him after 20 stupid years of not doing so. (Long story. Dumb, dumb, dumb, on my part.) Asked him to recommend a general physician. He gave me the name of a couple of gp's, then said, " Why not go for the best? See an internist. " He recommended two. I wound up with one who is a rheumatologist by subspecialty (which has proved endlessly helpful as I age and get creakier) and is one of the nicest doctors, men, people, friends you'd ever want to meet. His office is efficient, and so is he, as well as caring, thorough and kind. I know I could not be in better care. Tell the general care guy or gal what's on your mind. No, I don't think your gyn can do the tests, any more than I think your oral surgeon can. It took a week in Parkland Memorial for Dr. Norman Kaplan, a recognized pro in the field, to figure out what was going on in the case that had arrested itself. But your general care person can tell you whether you need to pursue it, and hook you up with an endocrinologist, if that's what you need. If it's not, start worrying about something else! Guest guest
Thanks, Cammie. I just got the name of a fantastic internist from my sister, so I'll try to make an appointment with him! Thanks for your support. I have my physical scheduled for one week before the surgery (if we keep that date!), so I don't know if he'll be able to squeeze me in that quickly! I'll definitely get myself a doctor though! Eileen > > Hi, Cammie. I have been thinking about this acromegaly think a lot > > this weekend. I actually am a wee bit concerned.
