Guest guest
Howdy to all! Well I went to see Dr Fisher yesterday for my 3 1/2 year checkup. From his point of view for the most part everything was good. Then there's the other stuff.... My recent reconstructive surgery has really kicked my butt. And after looking at my blood work now I know why! The high (or low) values are as follows! a.. glucose 75 b.. calcium 9.1 c.. total protein 6.2 d.. albumin 3.5 e.. globulin 2.7 f.. cholesterol 116 g.. triglycerides 65 h.. apolipoptorein AI 45 what the heck are these two about? i.. apolipoprotein B .37 j.. ferritin 20 k.. RBC 3.13 l.. hemoglobin 9.5 m.. hematocrit 28.9 n.. lymphocytes 18.3 So Doc wants me to get an iron infusion ASAP and possibly a blood transfusion as well. That will be up to the hematologist. He says that with my thighplasty there could be or is lymph involvement. My right leg is much more swollen than the left though both are darn puffy! (not to be confused with Puff Daddy!) And the ironic part to all this.....Doc is no fan of protein supplements but he knows that I am. We have agreed to disagree on this. He runs his program as he sees fit and I don't push the protein on others unless approached about it first. Well, he asked if I'm still doing protein and told me to do more! Says that I'm also malnourished at this time. I don't think it has to do with my RNY surgery but more with the reconstructive surgery. I suppose 7.5 hours of anesthesia, 5 days in the hospital and lots of blood lost makes Sue feel like caca! When will I go back to work? Heck, I don't know. I was hoping to this week, but I don't think I could/should until I get my infusion/transfusion and until this blasted drain is gone. Not to mention the big open spots on my legs. They are filling in but still oozing all sorts of nasty brown/green stuff. Hopefully that's signs of healing. I see Dr Weiland today and will find out for sure how much blood I lost and the ETA for work. I need a paycheck!!! (or a sugar daddy!) Huggzz, Sue Open RNY 10/26/98 From 500 lbs to 164! Guest guest
Sue, my Las Vegas Mexican eatery gambling, buddy, you NEED a packed red cell transfusion. That will help your iron, hemoglobin, hematocrit and energy. Your wbc (lymphocytes) are up from fighting the infection/healing you are trying to deal with. You also NEED the protein, and DO NOT, i repeat, NOT need to go back to work yet. Your body is under too much stress healing to deal with work at this point. You know me well enough to knwo that I am telling you this with love and concern. Your labs stink! You are like this because of your surgery. I can only imagine what they would be like if you hadn't prepared. Please be patient. Let Bob help you, and tell him to be patient too. I would hate to have to come out there, because then I would have to go to the M&M store, and I can't afford to go there........ Love you. gently hugsssss Doc Carolyn 3.5 yr checkup Howdy to all! Guest guest
My dear friend Carolyn, Thanks for caring so much. I did see Dr Weiland today and he agrees that I shouldn't go back to work until after I have the iron infusion and/or blood transfusion. I stopped by the hematologists' office yesterday so they could start the process with getting approval from Aetna and also gave the doctor a copy of my lab work. Unfortunately I'm in PCP limbo land right now and that complicates matters. My primary doctor had seizures about 6 weeks ago and due to his health issues has had to shut down his practice for the time being. His office is open 4 hours a day just so the office staff can process paperwork and keep a semblance of order. So I've had to switch PCP's. I decided to go to Dr Fisher's doctor (keep it in the family) and don't see the new guy till tomorrow. In the meantime, if I need any referrals I'm pretty much screwed. New doc won't give any till I'm officially seen as a patient there, and the old office.......... So that surely complicated matters somewhat today when I saw Dr Weiland. He removed my staples, stitches and drain and is relatively pleased with the way I am healing. However my right leg is about twice the size of my left and I've been somewhat short of breath. So he sent me for an ultrasound to r/o a blood clot. Talk about a run around! After about 2 hours Dr Weiland's office finally got someone at Aetna to realize that this was somewhat serious and needed to be approved ASAP. We finally get to the radiologist and I'm told I need an appointment. If they don't have anyone to take me I'll have to come back in the morning. I insisted they call Dr Weiland who verbally changed the order to STAT and suddenly they squeezed me in. Lucky for me....no clot! So I guess it has to do with my lymph system. I don't quite understand the whys, but somehow that's what's making me swell. So once again my leg is wrapped in ace bandages and elevated. I can tolerate this as long as it doesn't hit 95 again! We went to Better Nutrition and I stocked up on Isopure. Got some of that miracle powder from and that awesome Chai syrup and I'm working hard at getting my protein up to at least 150 grams a day. It's so darned hard now as I have like no appetite. So I won't eat..but I can drink! Food is over-rated anyhow, or so I've been told. Again....thanks Carolyn and thanks everyone else who emailed me!
