Guest guest
Hi Hello all This is a very useful forum indeed. Im 26 years old I went to an orthodontist and the first treatment he suggested was a small operation and braces would be the best treatment for my underbite. I (who at the time was ignorant of what jaw surgery is) said no can you do it without surgery. I'm due to get braces and a plate thingo in my upper jaw in october. a few questions I have. 1. How long have some of you taken from having jaw surgery until you were fit to work. Work as in talk and move around for the entire day ? 2. Anyone from austalia can you give me ideas of costs ? 3. Should I tell my ortho that I want surgery ? Or might possibly want it. Like is the treatment he gives me likely tobe different if I'm going to have surgery to what he would do if im not ? Im scared of getting a flat face and sticking out chin now from reading about the reasons for treating a deficent upper jaw with surgery. 4. Ive bern searching on google for pictures of what actually happens in jaw surgery and I havnt found much. I'm really wanting to see what actually goes in to you and how it looks. anyone got any linkages to where I might see such pictures ? Ive seen lots of before and after pictures and the results all look impresive . I want to see what hsppens inside of your face. 5. how much forward movement of your upper front teeth can you get from braces and a device inside your mouth ? Also is a lot if movement likely to be actually tilting as in tilting of your upper front teeth foreward ? Thanks very much. Its really good the forum you folk have got here
Guest guest
Hi My surgeon is quoting around $5K plus hospital, and other charges for anaesthetist etc. On top of that is the ortho fees of $10K. My surgeon strongly recoommends taking out top Medibank Private/ HBA insurance at least 12 months out from surgery. Which part of Aus are you from? I hope you don't support Collingwood :-) Plenty of photos on jaw surgery out there - hav a look at support group 2. Guest guest
Hi I am still learning the technical jargon. Basically I have a rather substantial porch that doubles as a top jaw. I have a 14 mm overhang which means the top must be brought back and down a bit after straightening the top set and bringing the lower jaw forward about 8mm. I haven't asked for a discount if I supply my own Meccano set! Apparently when I was a teen, my bottom jaw stopped growing. I have about 18 months of orthodontic work to look forward to before the surgery but I am seeing my surgeon regularly before then. The ortho work starts in about 4 weeks and about the right time as I am starting to get joint pains along with bad headaches. I'm from Melbourne too. As for supporting Collingwood, nah! My team ended up supporting the entire league this year. It would have been wonderful if they could have won their last match so Carlton would have the ignomy of two in a row at the bottom. I guess as a Tiger supporter you can relate a little, in a sort of strange way, with Collingwood's woe's though. Guest guest
You had a lot of good questions. I'll try to address some areas of concern. I also felt I had a " minor " underbite (all relative). I originally thought that was due to my lower jaw growing out too far...not true...it was due to my upper jaw being underdeveloped. My othrodontist said that if I was not willing to have the surgery, I should not get braces as it would make my underbite even worse! To compensate the underbite, my upper teeth had grown at an outward angle and my lower teeth had grown at a slight inward angle, so if I got braces, it would correct these angles and therefore make the underbite worse. It was really eye opening when I saw pre surgery xrays. He was right on all accounts. Every case is different, but in my case they pretty much just moved my upper jaw forward and my lower jaw back. They also rotated my lower jaw to center my chin to my face. My lower jaw was apparently growing at a left angle (I never even realized that!). I'm not sure what your exact situation is, but without surgery, they may be only able to do so much. I would definitely tell your ortho you are interested about possible surgery. He will most likely refer you to an oral surgeon for a consultation. It never hurts to talk to someone (some surgeons do charge a consult fee, so make sure you ask). As far as returning to work, I guess it depends on individual energy levels and what kind of work you do (lot of talking?). I would expect to be out at LEAST two weeks, but your energy will still be very low. I barely made a whole day until four weeks. At six weeks I was pretty much all back. I don't have an outside job but do have three little kids, so maybe someone who works outside of home can give you better advice.
