Question about band

I wonder if Mr. Attebery does not have a child himself or have a child

in his family that has a disability? I am guessing that he does and if

not, then he should be the model we use for other teachers to model

from.

~ Thanks!

Maverick plays drums. He has played since 5th grade and he is now in

9th.

He has had an aide all along. He has also had private lessons for 2

years.

In elementary school it was horrible. They had no desire in include

him and

I did all the accomdations.

In Jr. High it was WORSE. The band instructor was mean. To Maverick

AND to

me.

In HS his band class was the same period as his Sp. O P.E. class WHICH

he

had to take if he wanted to participate in Sp.O. Which he does. We

had to

make a choice. It was sad. His sister played in the marching band

all

through HS and he would go and sit with her and say, " Some day I am

going to

play in the band at the football game. " Now it couldn't happen. We

decided

to stick with the Sp. O PE for a couple of reasons but were very sorry

to

have him losing the band. Then the band instructor called me about

the

band schedule and I informed him that Mav would not be in band and why

and

he told me of the alternative of Mav just going to the Tuesday night

practice and thus being able to play at the football games. So he

goes from

practice from 5 to 8 on Tuesdays and has an aide (a band aide LOL) and

he

has an aide at the games. We decided only to have him play at the

home

games. The aide is Peggy. She worked at Roadrunner and also at a

summer

recreation program where he taught them about inclusion.

So, due to the rainstorm, the first band practice was cancelled and

this

past Tuesday was the first practice. Shalana(my daughter) happened

to have

been off work so I had her take him and STAY with him since she knows

band

and Mr. Attebery. She said practice went fine and Mr. Attebery

explained

that Mav couldn't march because he wasn't in the marching band just

the game

band and he was going to make me a CD of his " adapted music " . (All

this

without us discussing much more than the fact that he would not be

able to

play exactly what the others can.)

So, last night was our first home game. I took Maverick early for

band. We

got there and his aide was no where to be seen. I asked Mav where he

was to

go and he said, I don't know. I said, Are you to meet in the band

room?

And he said, Oh Yeah, and took off with a purposeful strut. I had a

hard

time keeping up with him because I was carrying Chip. By the time I

got to

the band room he had gone in to the uniform room and they were telling

him

where his uniform was. It was too high for him to reach (but they had

put

it right at the end so it would be easy for everyone to get to.) I got

the

uniform down and he took it from me, Mr. Independent. He then took

off to

find Mr. Attebery. I was struggling to keep up with him. I was a

distance

away and Mr. Attebery could not see me and Mav tapped him on the arm

and he

turned around and said, " Mav, you are here! Good. Now you need

someplace to

get that on. " And they took off. I picked Chip up and hurried down

halls

after them and finally caught up with him opening the boys bathroom

door and

said, " Will he need help with that? "

Mr. Attebery said, " I don't know, we'll see. " And went in there with

him.

I went back to the band room and a few minutes later my proud little

guy

came back in his uniform and Mr. Attebery came in saying, " Ok, let's

find

you some shoes and here is your hat. " He was AWESOME, taking care of

it all

himself when he had so much to do. THEN, he went off while we

finished

getting the shoes on. OH, I mentioned that I thought his aide was

going to

be here and he said, yes...she'll be here later. No concern. Then

he came

back and told Mav when he had his shoes on to go line up with the

band.

I followed Maverick out and was talking with him to the kids in front

of him

and behind him. Introducing them to each other and letting Mav know

to ask

them for help if he needed (and subtly letting them know that he was a

person and to treat him like one.) They were so cool, talking to

him,

telling him to put his hat a bit lower, telling him which one was the

unit

leader.

I then started explaining to Mav that he would march onto the field

but then

sit and during the 1/2 time show he would not march he would just

play the

drum. Mr. Attebery was walking up and down the rows checking everyone

out

at that time. Mav said, but I like to March. I told him, yes, you

can

march onto the field and off of the field, but during the game you

don't

march because you are not in the MARCHING band, you are in the

FOOTBALL

band. Mr. Attebery was there and he said, " Maverick, when we go on

the

field, you can go with me because I don't march either. " And Maverick

said,

OK.

I just started crying. From Mr. Todd at the Jr. High to THIS.

Ok, so then I left him and came home to pick up and the kids.

Got back

to the game and he was in the stands with the aide. She was not with

him.

She was standing in the stairs..about 4 rows above him. When it was

time to

play a student next to him was so SWEETLY reminding him what song and

where

on the drum to hit.

The kids were awesome with him. When they went on the field. There

are a

few percussion instruments that can't March and are in the front.

Like the

Bells and stuff. That is where Maverick was.. fitting in perfectly.

At one

point, he was a bit off beat and Mr. Attebery, who stays to the side

and

lets his students direct, crouched down and was directing him and he

played

right on beat then. It came so naturally to him. (Mr. Attebery)

We are just so impressed with this teacher who is for sure going above

and

beyond so lovingly and easily. And Mav doesn't even have an IEP for

his

class!!! It was a wonderful experience for Maverick. After the game

the

player, band members and COACHES were all praising him and telling him

how

good he was.

I wish more teachers could see how easy it is, I wish more people

could see

how what they do affects how others around them, and I for sure wish

Peggy

could be his full time aide!!!

I think this man needs a bunch of Thank you cards from us!!!

Great idea. Show them some positive, esp. since I am about to have an IEP

fight coming up.

Hello my baby got her band on Wed everything is going well so far, the

skin checks went well and she seems to be sleeping good. My only

concern is it seems that in the front just below where the band ends

and above her eyes that is scrunches up her forehead it looks very

uncomfortable and she seems to have a little dot on her forehead where

the band dips in the front. Cranial tech told me it is somewhat

common and it should stop doing that but I was wondering if anyone

else had this problem and how long it took before is fit the right

way. Thanks

It is very common. We call it angry eye. Push on your forehead. Do

you feel how the skin moves all around. This is just the band pushing

and scrunching it. It doesn't hurt - she wouldn't sleep in it if it

did. na had this for her whole first band. The forehead is a

key holding area so it has to fit just right which can cause the skin

to get moved around. If the dot fades within an hour and isn't

an " angry " red (meaning bright, irritated looking) then it's fine.

My son doesn't have the scrunched look too much but he does get the

red dot quite often. He sleeps on his tummy and this pushes the point

in the middle forehead into his skin between his eyes. It usually

goes away once he doesn't sleep like that once. He has had his DOC

band for almost 4 weeks and that little red dot comes and goes. His

band also shifts around quite a bit on his forhead but CT said it was

ok so we are fine with it.

On another note, I was noticing a bulge on his right side in front of

the right side holding point. It started to worry me because I thougt

it was going to bulge out there because the holding point was in the

wrong place. I called CT just now and explained. She asked if it was

where the opening is under the velcro where it is split. Sure enough

it was when I checked...so I said yes. She said this is normal and 4

weeks after the band comes off it will go away. I am always impressed

with them when I call. They answer my questions right away and

usually know exactly what I am talking about. Lots of luck to you.

Bobbi,

Just to let you know - both girls had the bump under the velcro -

na's was really pronounced. They said not to worry and lo and

behold within 1-2 months after graduation (I kind of forgot about it

but know it was gone by 2 months) it was gone. It's fluid build-

up. They really are so helpful at putting a mom's mind at ease.

My son would get an angry eye with his doc band once and a while. If

I opened the band up a little and closed it again it would go away.
