I think that a lot of people use the terms band and helmet interchangeably.

They are referred to as bands because the tops of them are open, unlike a

helmet which is completely enclosed. My son has a STARband but when I'm

explaining the device to someone not familiar with it I usually refer to it

as a helmet. People tend to " get " what it is when explained as a helmet.

Perhaps the person in the office was using the term interchangeably as well.

I think that someone else in this group (Lesley or ?) has a STARband

and they were referred by Dr. Sun to CIRS in Oakland.

Will your insurance company cover either band? That was the big deciding

factor for us. We had a Hanger office 5 minutes from us but insurance would

not cover the cost. So, we make the trip out to Oakland every three weeks

and we only had to pay for 20% of the cost. It's also a good excuse for me

to stop by Ikea (located 5 minutes down the road) after our appointment :>)

Comparison of different bands/helmets?

Hi I am in the middle of deciding which band/helmet I will go with for

my 4.5-month baby girl. It seemed that most parents chose STAR band,

DOC band and Hanger band in the US. In my area (bay area, CA), there is

no DOC band close by. So i need to go with either hanger or STAR band.

It seemed that STAR band is more popular than Hanger. However, my home

is more close to one clinic which offered Hanger band (1 mile away from

my home) than some clinic located in oakland which offered STAR band

(30 miles driving from my home). Have any of you used Hanger band from

pleasanton office? I'd like to hear your experience and

recommendations. Thanks much!!!

For now, my ped referred me to children's hospital at oakland. I called

the office and i was told that Dr. Sun only used helmet. How you

think the pros & cons when comparing band vs. helmet?
