Guest guest
Okay I'm probably falling into the trap i warn everyone else about...BUT I'm stressing out. I've been weighing myself every day... which staying the same weight or fluxuating doesn't bother me, I know its part of it. but my scale has actually said i've GAIINED weight! First day, didn't think too much about it, but this is like the 3rd day and it has only gone up not down (when i fluxuate it goes both directions). I ahven't made any changes in my diet...although I do realize i can eat more than i used to, although it still isn't that much. wearing, albeit a heavy long denim skirt, my scale said 229! (I was 223 3 days ago). its not that time of the month, so it shouldn't be that. The few lbs aren't what bother me so much as the trend...I've put myself back on liquids just to see if that will help... all soups today..although one had veggies in it, but i was careful to chew chew chew like we are supposed to do. OKay, just had to vent. Now, my second problem. I have losing ALL MY HAIR!! I knew it was a side effect, but I didn't think I would really lose that much. I pull it out in handfuls (and not just little ones). I HATE washing my hair, because the hairloss is just awful. And brushing my hair afterwards..yuck. I am getting protein, i don't think that is the issue. I'm just wondering if any one else has had a problem with severe loss, and if/what they have done for it. Iam currently using the Nioxin, which I like, and helps my hair feel more full... I had A LOT of hair before surgery, so i was never really concerned...but when I was washing my hair i realized how thin it really is Anyways, suggestions would be appreciated Chrissy OpenRNY 02/19/03 310/229 !@#*&^$#! *sigh*
Guest guest
My scales don't like me either-I weigh every morning-just to keep myself in tow and I too flucuate a pound or two but, have been stuck going on two weeks now with the same number. It does get frustrating but, I have made my mind up that as long as I do not gain-I am OK. In a post yesterday, I was told that muscle weighs more than fat and if I am exercising I could be gaining muscle-yet losing fat. So I am going with this one just to pasify myself. As far as the hair goes-I am losing mine also but, not as drastic as it sounds like you are. I got a perm last week just to hide my thin spots better and my hairdresser gave me good news. She told me I have a ton of new growth- little sprigs all over the place. So as long as new is coming in to replace what is falling out-I guess I will never be totally bald. I asked her what I could do-she said nothing except keep taking the vitamins that I am and doing the protein. She said there is nothing any hairdresser can do-this reaction is coming from the inside so NOTHINg you do to the outside will help. A friend of mine that had the WLS has gotten so bad, she has bought a wig-thank GOD mine hasn't gotten to that point yet. > Okay I'm probably falling into the trap i warn everyone else about...BUT I'm > stressing out. Guest guest
On the muscle vs. fat difference, think of it this way. You have 100 pounds of iron (muscle) and 100 pounds of feathers (fat) ... which one takes up more room? The 100 pounds of feathers!!! So the more muscle you add, the more compact you will be. Muscle density is much greater! sknny2b mwilley@...> wrote: In a post yesterday, I was told that muscle weighs more than fat and if I am exercising I could be gaining muscle-yet losing fat. Guest guest
hi, not sure if this will help but do a search under cancer and hair loss from chemo - seems like in some of my studies they said if you rinse with cold cold water you lose less - check and see and i'll try to look too. visit our website www.geocities.com/tanyarn96/countryside.html -- Okay now, what is going on?? Guest guest
Chrissy, on the scale thing I will be of absolutely no help since I just went out and bought one. I said over and over again i wouldn't have one of those things in my house until I was at the maintenance stage of my journey, and here I am. Weighted down (literally) with a scale. About the hair, once I started using the Nioxin cleanser and conditioner + adding the leave in treatment mousse, my hairloss made a dramatic stop. Maybe I waited so long that it was bound to stop whether I used Nioxin or not, but the circumstances of handfulls of hair in the shower and during brushings stopping after only a couple uses of the product are enough to make me belive THAT is what really helped me. I'm with you about the protein thing, tho. Its not always a lack of vitamins and protein that can make us lose our hair. I've always been one to get LOADS of protein in and my monthly blood checks say all my levels are fine. I think any time after major surgery all your body's energy goes to healing the owie and the fast growing cells like hair and nails, suffer the consequences. Anasthesia will also have some affect on this. Take heart and be glad that you had lots of hair to begin with. It should help in the long run. Guest guest
Hi Toi and everyone Actually, hair loss like this is very common anytime there is an extreme restriction of caloric intake and drastic/fast weight loss. It doesn't matter if the person has had surgery or not. And yes, it doesn't always relate to protein, vitamins, etc. It's as though the body is reserving it's energy towards more important bodily functions, and hair is just simply not a priority. Hope this helps Caroline Lap RNY 5/2/03 367/308/150 www.tinyurl.com/bkld I'm with you about the protein thing, tho. Its not always a lack of vitamins and protein that can make us lose our hair. Guest guest
The trauma of surgery and the anesthesia has a lot to do with the hair loss also. Your hair grows in cycles of about 6 months. So the loss you see is actually a reaction to that trauma your body went through 4-6 months earlier. Guest guest
Chrissy, I had my surgery on the 7th of April and the same thing is happening to me regarding hair loss. I too hate to shower because I have the same outcome as you do. I told my surgeon at my appointment last week and he said it wasn't unusual. He commented that its not only the protien but the shock to your body as well as the rapid weight loss. Eventually, he assured me, it will stop and my hair will grow back. Still..... it's hard to lose your hair. Take Care, Open RYN 4-7-03 351/281/???
Guest guest
hi - you know i've been reading these posts about losing hair and i'm a cosmetologist as well as a nurse and hair need nutrients to grow and that is why its falling out - which as a nurse is scary b/c your body needs nutrients and it will use what it gets for vital parts to keep you alive and take it away from less vital parts like hair - i worry about that - the surgery not being good for the body but ppl years later are thin alive and happy so at some point the body must adjust. visit our website www.geocities.com/tanyarn96/countryside.html -- Re: Okay now, what is going on??
