Thank you all for taking the time to post. I have found hope just

reading your postings. at this time I have been to more Dr.s than I

can count or remember. every two years or so, i get sick and tired

of being sick and tired and attempt to get the dr.s to do the same

old test and get a blank stare from the drs that say0 " but the tests

say everything is allright. " " Have you been under a lot of stress

lately? they ask.... anyhow, The trail of Dr.s finally ended in a

Psychiatrist. He prescribed Welbutrin which actually helped a bit

with the fatigue. My tsh tests came back normal and that was the

farthest I was able to go with my last Dr.

Now we have no insurance and I have found you all. the thought

of starting over paying big money again to possibly get the same old

answer is scary. I am experiencing later symptoms of hypothyroidism

and I am starting to feel hopeless and even dangerous in some cases

of day to day activity. I am afraid that my children will never

know the real me and I am afraid to hold a conversation of any

substance in fear of saying something not well thought out. Even the

subjects that I was an authority on..so I sit silently and listen.

Can I realy do this on my own and not break the bank?

I want to be me again.

In your experience, and those whom you have talked to, how do the

dr's respond to a patient that has self medicated and then come to

them. I dont see us gettting insurance for another six or more

months and I can't see waiting that long before I do something.

Dr's would much rather assume that our symptoms are in our heads. It's not in

our heads, but not far from it, either. :-) I self medicate and it's been the

single most important decision I've ever made for myself. I don't regret it one

bit. My last Endo talked me into giving up Armour (thought I'd amuse her) for

Levoxyl, and it left me with the same symptoms after being on it, not even a

week? I tossed it, and started taking the Armour again that I'd ordered online.

It works better and I am a lot easier to live with, and I can do things. It

took me getting sick and tired of being sick and tired to take the plunge. I

think it was the right one. :-)

nope, I suspect I was hypoT but in late 2001, I went hyperthyroid and found out

I had graves disease. It's the opposite of hypo and makes life just as

miserable. I was overmedicated for at least a year on anti thyroid drugs, but

later found out after weaning off the atd's, that I was hypoT. Six months or so

after the atd's were stopped, I had all the symptoms I had while my thyroid was

being suppressed which led to hypohell. My dr said that my labs were 'normal'

but I'd already learned where my labs had to be to feel well and function. I

have antibodies so testing TSH is useless for me. FreeT3 and FreeT4 show

whether I'm hypo now.

I had tests done, and found out I also had TPO antibodies which most hashi's

patients have, and was already taking armour for at least 5-6 weeks. The

confirmation of the TPO antibodies only proved I was right. I needed

replacement for the thyroid which wasn't working for me. I started off on 1

grain, and am up to 3 1/2 now.

Thanks, for the reply. did you self medicate before you were

diagnosed?

went back.

isn't it the doctors " playing God " when they refuse to treat us and keep us

sick..and risk our health and our lives.

My Dr [top doc] asked why i hadn't started increasing my thyroxine on

my own when i was severely undertreated by my GP for 6 months so he is

receptive to patients knowing their own bodies and acting accordingly.

{my gp only rxed one month supply of 25mcg at a time so self increasing

the dose wasn't possible]. However he prescribes armour so self treating

isn't necessary. I imagine other top doics will be ok with self

treatment unless the patient is self treating for something like weight

loss alone and has no hypot symptoms.

Well, in my experience MD's aren't very happy with self-medicating. My HMO endo

got waaaay up on his high horse and accused me of playing God by

self-medicating. Since he was so threatened by lil' ol' me (hehehe), I don't

think I'll be going back. So good luck - you'll need it.

That's exactly why he was so upset! It was HIS job to play God, not mine!

Cindi,

Yep, you would be correct. It's them palying God, but then again. It's okay for

them to do. THEY spend lots of money on medical school and we didn't. I still

wonder just how in the world they came out not knowing much more than they went

in knowing. Never ceases to amaze me.
