Guest guest
Dear Trish, If you're planning on holding off on starting your family for a while, post-surgery, birth control pills are not a viable option. You won't be absorbing the pill, so discuss a better option with your obgyn... live each day like it's your last... love like you've never been hurt... Guest guest
Yeah, we had talked about it.. and the doc says that we HAVE to use condoms in addition to it.. I already have hormone imbalances and don't ovulate.. so he wants to see if the birth control can offer some sort of regulation..but he warned the heck out of me about just relying on that... Thanks for looking out for me!!!!! Guest guest
Another thing about the pill....DON'T GET BACK ON IT (or any other birth control for that matter) RIGHT AWAY! I asked my doc at my final pre-op when I could resume birth control and sexual activity. He said that I should wait AT LEAST TWO WEEKS before getting back on birth control to AVOID BLOOD CLOTS. You might want to ask your gyno about " the ring " ...same as the pill, three weeks on, one week off, just as effective in birth control and regulating your period. Only difference is it's a ring that you insert vaginally. - > > Dear Trish, > > > > If you're planning on holding off on starting your family for a > while, > > post-surgery, birth control pills are not a viable option. Guest guest
Wow!! Also a good point!!! I will have to ask about that!! I like rings!! LOL! I had talked to him, a little about my concerns.. he said he wouldn't put me on the birth control until my 2nd natural cycle anyway.. who knows how far away that will be.. but in the meantime, I think I WILL ask about the ring! Who manufactures it? Does it hurt? I will have to look into it! I think I will call him right now! Thanks a million! Guest guest
FYI - Depo Provera injections are a viable option also. I know some swear they gained tons and then there are plenty who are like me that has seen nothing of any consequence. I have been on Depo Provera since 1995 and sailed right through surgery with no surprise period etc. I get my shots every 8 weeks instead of twelve to deal with the estrogen/progesterone imbalance in my body. Just because you do not ovulate now don't be surprised if it returns very quickly. Not necessarily full fertility but enough to make you vulnerable of getting pregnant. I have a VERY long standing history of no periods yet when I started a major weight loss back in 1994 within less than 2 months I was having a period every month. so just 60 lbs or so woke up my body. I also noticed at about 75 lbs this time that I could tell my body was going through some hormonal changes. Seems to have settled down right now but could rise up again. D. > Wow!! Guest guest
Depo-Provera does work great for some people. Only thing is, it can take as much as 18 months to leave your system so you can pregnant. Not an option for me since I'm already 34, pre-op and don't have a lot of time to waste! LOL I'm also one of those people who get major food cravings around my period, and the progesterone in the shot doesn't help...that's what my gyno said anyway. - > > Wow!! Also a good point!!! Guest guest
Trish, I almost forgot...it's called NuvaRing. I haven't used it yet. My surgery is Thursday, so it will be a while still before I start it, but my gyno says it's a good choice for me. When I get under 200, I think I'll switch to the patch. Here's the url for the ring. -G http://www.nuvaring.com/consumer/aboutNuvaring/index.asp? SetSession=Yes&strGUID={9A1DA4C0-26F4-42F2-A0DE-D02B9D399960} &SID=587098725 > > > Wow!! Also a good point!!! Guest guest
Depo... that's the shots you get? correct? Or is that the implant they put in your arm that slowly releases the hormones over time? > > Wow!! Also a good point!!! I will have to ask about that!! I like > > rings!! LOL! Guest guest
I always feel the need to repost about this when I see the issue come up. Please be very, very cautious about taking oral contraceptives after RNY or DS WLS. If your procedure included malabsorbtion, you may malabsorb birth control pills and end up not getting the full harmone treatment and therefore ending up pregnant. This was posted a few months ago by Dr. Del la Cruz-Munoz. Guest guest
I realize it's not for everyone. Just trying to put options on the table. D. > Depo-Provera does work great for some people. Guest guest
Depo Provera is the injection. Norplant is the stuff put under your skin and lasts 5 years. D. > > > Wow!! Also a good point!!!
