Guest guest
I don't have any additional info re: appropriate strollers for jra kids. But, I do use a jogging stroller for my 45lb. girl and I would just advise you that the jogging strollers I've seen and the one I use, does not have a brake mechanism other then a wrist strap. If you can find something with a brake mechanism you will probably should opt for it. Bob

I know there is a web site, but don't know what it is. If I find it I will let you know. Guest guest
Dear Becki, I just went through this stroller business with Kate as she can't walk for long periods of time either. Her rheaumy said just any kind of stroller wouldn't give her the kind of support she needed and could actually make her hurt more--so she recommended a transport chair--it's similiar to a large size stroller but made according to the child's measurements. Kate goes to our main children's hospital here so it was all done there (with a script from her dr.) Well, our insurance decided that it would be better for her to get a custom wheelchair as she could " grow " into it! We only needed something for long walks etc.. like you do. Anyway after many arguments with them they still wouldn't budge (even though the transport chair was 1/3 the price of a wheelchair!) So we now have her wheelchair and insurance paid for it (we aren't complaning and it's been a huge blessing!) We're leaving this weekend for King's Island and I know it will be put to good use! Well, sorry to ramble--just wondered if you've explored the transport chair or wheelchair option. Good Luck! and Kate--7 severe poly and AVN
Guest guest
Dear , thank you for the advice. It really gives me some more options. My insurance will cover a rental wheel chair but I have to pay $350 and 20%.I e-mailed a company today and they have 2 stollers that are made for special needs children. They have the special needs jr That can handle up to 100 lbs and the special needs goes to 150lbs.Both come with a jogging wheel and two swivel wheels. They gave me the # to Baby Jogger and to ask for special needs department to give me more info, but to order them through Niche Retail because they can get it for $200 less.Funny how they charge more if your insurance will cover it.Anyway I can get the jr for $550 and the bigger one for $590.I am going to a talk to his rheumy and find out what he has to say.Again thank you.Nashville Zoo here we come. Guest guest
Hi Becki- I completely understand where you are comming from. I almost bought a jogging stroller, but luckily last night found a very large stroller that Tasie will have for many years. It was a clearance buy at Walmart...makes it all the better. Do you have a walmart or K-mart or even Target where you are? They are a good buy and I know they have jogging strollers for $130 and under. You may even try their websites. Love to all, Casaria __________________________________________________
Guest guest
Hi, Good luck Becki, with finding the best (and an affordable) solution. Whether it be jogger, stroller, or wheelchair. I don't know exactly why but even when was having a lot of difficulty walking his doctors were never keen on the idea of him using a wheelchair. At one point one said something to the effect of, "...we help treat kids to get them out of wheelchairs, not put them into them(?)." His elementary school staff had suggested he use one, on an as needed basis. Even his pediatrician mentioned it, when things were really bad ... but the rheumatologists were against it. With Josh, though, a particular joint might be affected for a few weeks or months, and then that joint would be much better and his arthritis would be active somewhere else. Maybe that's why? Also, it seemed that raising his dose of steroids usually improved his symptoms greatly and had him more mobile again. Not that that's something I agree whole-heartedly with doing, after the struggles we've had to taper the doses. Josh was small enough that, when needed, I'd carry him to his classroom in the morning. A few hours later, he'd be able to walk alright most of the time. Other times, he'd sit comfortably in our little red wagon and we'd pull him. He has crutches from when he had an unrelated foot injury but after a day of using crutches, other parts sometimes get sore and start hurting. A wheelchair or similar alternative seems like a very helpful and sometimes necessary tool. Guest guest
Hi, my son Zachary will be 7 months later this week and is getting his starband tomorrow (brachy, flat in the back and recovering from tort). Anxious and worried of course. Strange questions-- I bought a maclaren stroller that doesn't have a front bar so he can't lean forward, he just leans back (against his head). He sits up on his own for a couple of minutes if we set him up. Z weighs 23lbs and it is hard for me to carry him all of the time. I don't have the back for the baby bjorn and he doesn't like the sling. We stay inside most of the day. I don't want to put him in a stroller with his head back against it. Am I crazy? After he is wearing the helmet, is it ok to be in the stroller (in moderation of course)? Do babies lean forward more in the strollers with the bars in front? Should I buy a another stroller? Also, my guys does 2 or so hours of tummy time a day, but the orthotist said that is not nearly enough. He sleeps about 15-16 hours a day, and by the time he eats, changes and gets a bath, the rest is tummy time with some cuddling before bed. How do people work in more tummy time? Forego naps? Thanks,
Guest guest
Hi , My son gets about the same amount of tummy time and while I try to increase it, he has reflux so the added pressure on his tummy makes him vomit a lot. Because of this, he gets a lot of upright time too, he loves the bumbo seat (great investment if your son doesn't sit up on his own yet). He will play from his bumbo seat too with a variety of toys. It's a nice alternative to tummy time when you need to keep them off their backs. Guest guest
, I just did a quick search and came up with this: http://www.nextag.com/medical-stroller/products-html. They are still pricey. I am a special education teacher and some of my students are in wheelchairs. When we go for walks, we use a stroller that looks like the two on this page in the $600 range, and these are middle school kids, albeit small ones. I had no idea that they were so expensive. You might also ask your local social services if there is an association for disabled children. There's a local one in my town in Colorado and they paid for me to take my students on a field trip to Denver this summer. Paying for a stroller for a child with jra, would be right up their alley. Guest guest
I used to use an umbrella stroller, but where we are in Florida people just don't care when they see little children. I'm always getting walked into, also. I'm only 4'10 " , so people seem to think that against me they have the right of way. I ended up having a wheelchair donated to us. I really didn't know how to obtain one at the time, but a co-worker brought one in after I said that I had been looking for one. Even that doesn't always help, but I feel that she is much safer. It has helped a lot at Busch Gardens, and for nature walks. We took it on the " Let's Move Together " walk also I didn't really want to admit that she needed it either, but fear won out here. > > > I know I've seen this type of thing talked about before, but for the life of me can't find it. > > > > I am looking into getting Audrey a larger stroller.
