Guest guest
Vicki, What about the census? I believe the 1930 census has recently become available, not to mention the earlier censuses. And maybe parish records? I'm assuming the family was Catholic? Re changing names, I have a friend with the lovely last name of Copenhagen. Turns out that her German grandfather decided as they were leaving Europe from that city that they would change their German name for the name of the city where their freedom began. At 1/16 Danish, I'm more Danish than my friend with the Danish name! On the Ellis Island website there's an article by a researcher who tried something like 16 different variations of the spelling of her Slavic last name. I hope your researcher tried some variations of your family's surname. Might be worth a try. Guest guest
HI Tenayahh Thanks for the web site of " Little Italy " Very interesting... ****What about the census?*** Yep, checked that and nothing is listed. ****And maybe parish records?**** Yep, checked all the Catholic churches and nothing there either... Some records had been destroyed by fire in the the early days.. ****On the Ellis Island website there's an article by a researcher who tried something like 16 different variations of the spelling of her Slavic last name.**** The guy that did the hunting for me on the Ellis Island site did spell it every way he knew how. AT this point, we think they had come into the country under another name then changed it. If we only knew what that name was... and who knows why they did the name change. Thanks for the impute though. Vicki
