Guest guest
I use the Viactiv chews and all my blood tests have come out fine. But I did only have 2 feet bypassed so that could be why I do OK. My surgery was 10/10/00 & was RNY with mini gastric bypass (fobi pouch). I have lost close to 120 pounds and am near goal. I am wearing size 6 jeans. I do not dump so can eat pretty much anything. I wish I did dump at times so would stay away from sugar. Blessings from Melody in CO.

Guest guest
You want calcium citrate, yes. Caltrate is a brand name that is tricky to the ear. It is actually carbonate form of calium, useful for building kidney stones, not bones. Guest guest
My blood work was perfect. Had been right along. Carbonate does that. Stores it neatly in the blood & kidneys. Got my nice high calcium blood levels, walked across the street & had my dexascan and got the utterly devastating news that my osteoporosis is advanced enough that I could fracture if I fall in the house. Great news, huh? Scan first, don't trust the blood work. Full DXAscan, not wrist or ankle. Guest guest
All that is being said is that research has shown that even MINIMAL intestinal bypass of the Duodenum combined with the altering of the stomach to the size of the gastric pouch has created for MOST WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY PATIENTS WHO HAVE HAD ANY FORM OF RNYs the phenoenom of problematic calcium absorption with MANY forms of CALCIUM, be it ASCOBATE, CARBONATE, OYSTER SHELL, or a few others. Wheter it was mixed with C and D and boron oor magnesium and ZINc or whatever. And BLOOD TESTS did not show the problem existed!!! WHY??? Cause trhe calcuim was spilling out into the blood, and in my case was forming globs of calcium deposits ON MY TEETH, not in my teeth... ON MY TEETH...AGAIN not ABSORBING. Lot of scraratching going on that time, she showed it to me. SORT OF LIKE THE OLD POLITICAL SAYING... do you want the CONTENT or do you want the FORM. I want form, even thoght those little Viactiv suckers do tste good and are darn cheapm and my daughter in law helped bring them to market and I can even get them for FREE! I WANT BOTH MY BLOOD AND BONES TO HAVE CALCIUM STORES, thanks, NOT just my blood. You might be fine, but it took my docs 18 months, a broken ankle and a very stange teeth cleaning... then a little research by my GP who was unfortuately more on top of things than my surgon and nutrionist... An immediate full bone scan, even thogh my surgeoin and nutrtionist siad " NO REASON..Calcium is fine " A fining of MILD osteopenia... immediate swtich toi calcium citrate via my GP.. a still Cluless nutritionist @ my surgeons office for the next year, and then a complet turn around at their office, after they told me I was scaring the whole support group by telling them my story...just like we are telling you it now. Wanna believe us, fine, want to listen, listen, or ignore us, and dont listen, its up to you. What I cant figue out is why people keep getting all so fired up about it. I mean even the nutritionist @ my doctors office saeemed to have an ax to grind. She just kept telling everyone to take Cabonate with all the studies right on out there for everyone to read, didnt make sense to me. Why not just reccomend Citate as a precaution? Maybe you who take it, will be ok onViactv, mabe you wont. Hey its your bones, not mine, not s, not Sues. The way I figure it Im worth the extra $8 a month and if i really WANT a Viactiv i can pop one now AND THEN WITH A HOT CUP OF TEA BUT, FOUND a chew that I mentioned a few moths ago called Calcium CHEW by Now products with 20% citrate and the rest carbonate and no sugar, so i go for that instead. Please dont send email to ask me about that chew, its made by NOW Products, its in the old mail ... check it out yourselves if you really want it thanks :)aDria ... Guest guest
I have only about 12 inches bypassed and all of my blood work was " fine " (medical terminology from my surgeon) and guess what? My bone scan said that I was NOT fine. My surgoen insists that two Tums a day is " fine " (again technical term) but my bones say otherwise. You might want to check with your bones and not your blood. Alice The Loon Dr. Boone Dec. 28, 2000 > I use the Viactiv chews and all my blood tests have come out fine. Guest guest
Thanks Betty, When will people understand! Especially WOMEN who for many reasons are MOREW AT RISK.. Its amazing! I wish it wasnt true, but it is. I became very unpopular @ my hometown meetings because I went out on a tangent around this, but I still hope some people listened to me instead not. Now the reccomendations are for CITRATE but It was me and nos support, and I was told to " SHUT UP " THEN TOO. I was UPSETTING PEOPLE. So WHY are we so verbal about it? Maybe cause we dont want to see MOE people come down with weak and brittle bones, from the surgery. And at this point there is NO excuse for ANY dr reccomending carbonate to any RNY On the other hand, remember, too folks, another " old wives tale " that I was in disagrrement with, that sent me packing as an " UNWELCOME TROUBLEMAKER " from my meetings... be careful around decaf soda...PLEASE... stay away from the caffinated sodas, , and ALSO the deccaff sodas, anthing BROWN in sodas, anything with high PHOSPHATE... it wrecks havoc on your little bones. And Caffine in moderation, its not good for bones... Eat well or as well as you can, try to do some soy products, even a few, its palatable in Chinese restaurants, also green things, no.. not St Patty Day cookies, cakes or muffins.. Take care of yourself, you ARE working with less than a full deck inside,,, respect that, especiallty those who had LAP surgeries, sometimes its easy to forget. One of my cronies with a LAP RNY who felt " good " after a week decided to move a couch across a room..... Almost went back to theb hospital, lots of pain. Funny she ended up with an ulcer at around 5 weeks, Im nowhere near a med person, but if it were a hernia, Id be real suspicious. But shes a feisty woman, a few months post op now, probably lurking oin this board right now, moving a 52 inch tv as she reads this. :)aDria 10/29/9 Transected ProximalVertical Banded RNY (Fobi type)- Marlex Mesh Band Dr Coe/Western MA 310/139/lordy lordy, lordy )))))))))))))))/ 125 Re: Calcium > I have only about 12 inches bypassed and all of my blood work > was " fine " (medical terminology from my surgeon) and guess what? Guest guest
Remind me that I'm smacking myself in the head AGAIN for not listening to this in 1999. I could saved myself a lot of damage if I'd scanned THEN, rather than waiting a whole freaking stubborn year. Which is exactly why some of us are SOOOOOOOOO rabid about it. Why hurt if you don't have to?
