Guest guest
G- My consultant strongly suspects Graves Disease but has never bothered to confirm this through tests. After getting a second opinion from another thyroid specialist I have decided to be treated with radioactive iodine sometime in the next few months to kill off my thyroid gland, followed by taking thyroid hormone for the rest of my life H - **I hope/am suggesting that you intend to get testing for absolute confirmation before you proceed with this treatment G - they include losing most of your friends due to chronic bad temper H - **You may have lost a few. But not "most" considering you have over 500 here with us ; - ) Has it ever been suggested that you take a mild anti-depressent to try and supress some of those anger bouts? Zoloft is great. etc.... GREAT to hear that your CU is presently controlled. What a relief that must be. Here's hoping that lasts a mighty long time for you. The only information I found on the net pertaining to radioactive treatment was something that incidentally directed me to the Mastocytosis board....and another article dealing with administration of radioactive iodine. Let me know if you'd like either of these articles. Neither are directly related to urt. though SWELL in Michigan (usa) ~
Guest guest
Dear , Thanks for your e-mail. The second thyroid specialist I saw was very helpful and we had a lengthy discussion about the iodine treatment which reassured me on every point. Apparently the treatment is suitable for my condition even if it isn't Graves'. It may or may not help my CU, but after five years of recurring overactive episodes I would be going for the treatment anyway. An overactive thyroid really affects your personality, and each time I thought I would recognise the symptoms next time....Unfortunately it creeps up on you. The increase in metabolism makes you very irritable - it's as though you're fine but everyone around you is extremely annoying all of a sudden. Fortunately, Carbimazole (I think it's called something like methidamzole in USA) soon gets that sorted. So I'm very calm and sweet-tempered again and my friends have forgiven me... The big question is whether my CU is caused by the thyroid condition, or by another autoimmune problem. And if it is caused by the thyroid, whether killing the thyroid gland will make any difference. I'll let you all know how it goes. Best wishes Gill (London, UK) > G- My consultant strongly suspects Graves Disease but has never bothered to > confirm > this through tests.
