Guest guest
Interesting to seek the discussion of sedation vs no sedation for blocks. The first docs I saw used sedation but the group of docs that i've been using for the past 10+ years do not. I have to say that I much prefer no sedation. With sedation, i would be knocked on my butt for almost 24 hours....dizzy, sleepy, etc. Without sedation, I'd leave and go to work (until my docs heard about it and and put an end to going to work after blocks). To each their own, but I frankly found the sedation aftereffects far more debilitating than the anxiety of having a block. It just worked better for me to have the block and get it over with. I still would not go by myself, but it was great not being sedated to get the injection. That is why I am letting him do them instead of my pain doc who knocks you completely out! I just do not think it is all that healthy to keep doing and would much rather be a wake if I could!!!! LOL Dawn wrote: Chrissy, I am glad that you can get those done closer to home, what I am wondering is, when I had my 3 done I was given some sedation, I didn't sleep totally, it just relaxed me, but I had to have someone drive me home. So my question is Do they not give sedation for these blocks? Just curious. Dawn I totally agree with you that stress can cause you to become ill. I read this study once long ago, that a college did some research and found out that stress actually reduces your imunity to diseases especially contagious ones. When Linsday was doing her last year of classes, she had a very heavy load, she was always getting colds, it seemed like she had a cold year round. She does have allergies but she would run a temp and cough. This year she hasn't been sick much at all. I hope you both have a great weekend. Lin I am also glad that they are going to rule out the cancer for you also! I think it will give you big relief to know that stress can play such a horrible role on our bodies and cause us to get so sick! I know this to be a fact with me! Having terrible problems with the disc in my neck again, but believe it is all the stress of the Holidays and recently getting sick with the Bronchitis and Sinusitis! I would give anything to tell someone that I was healthy for a change, wouldn't you? Well please keep us all updated on what is going on with you and try and rest and relax for a while! I know the tests for the cancer will come back fine! Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you and Best Wishes to you and your family. Have a Great Holiday and LOL always! Guest guest
Hi everyone -- Hope you don't mind if I put my opinion in here. I have had many blocks over the past five years, both with and without sedation. The doc used Versid (spelling?) and one day forgot to give it to me. Although I was nervous and my muscles tensed, there was no pain or discomfort and best of all, I was awake later in the day. Not zonked out for a day or two. After that, I went without sedation and never had a problem with the muscles tensing up. I would much rather go without sedation. However, some people need the sedation just to get through it. Do what is best for you.
Guest guest
Like Helen, I've been having my upper blocks done without sedation. The doctor did give me the Versed this last time, but that was because my muscles were so knotted up that they was jumping around, and the blood pressure cuff was way too tight, so they gave me 1/2 an injection extra more than normal. I like it better though without because it's a pain to try to keep up with 3 kids when you are zonked out the rest of the day after that block! Guest guest
I am one of those people, because the RSD is in my knee's, hips and legs, with the lumbar sympathetic block you have to lay on a cold table, when I said I can't take the pain in my at the time left knee, the doctor (this is the 1 I reported to the AMA, for several reasons) sighed and said somebody go get her a pillow, then it was jammed underneath my knee but it was in such an uncomfortable. That my hip hurt for 2 weeks, and now it is in my hips. So if I ever find someone that will do more blocks I will request sedation. Have a good evening, Lin -- Re: Re: Sedation for blocks Helen, Please just know that your oppinion is always welcome! I also agree with you about sedation and also agree that some do need it so they stay calm. I am glad that I had it the first time, because I was extremely nervous, but now a piece of cake, because I know what to expect and like the fact I will not be sleeping the rest of the day away!
