first question - has anyone had Thermachoice performed by their GYN?

many of us seem to go through a period of very heavy bleeding post WLS and

mine is compounded with my thyroid problems i beleive but the GYN i saw

thinks Thermachoice is the answer. just wondering if anyone has done it,

what the results were and are there complications i should be aware of.

if you don't know what i'm talking about you probably haven't had it done

but you can read about it at www.heavyperiods.com

second question - for those who appealed insurance to get a breast lift

and/or reduction did it take longer than usual when hearing from them or

shorter? did you get a positive result? i submitted my appeal letter last

week and typically my ins. will respond to an EOB within 30 days but i'm not

sure that standard applies with an appeal. i have had approval for

surgeries ranging from 2-8 weeks.

if you have had a breast lift or small reduction how long was your recovery

period? how long were you out of work? how much followup was needed? how

long were you swollen?

thanks

I had a breast lift/reduction in March 2000. The insurance would not approve

the mastoplexy (sp?). I had a panniculectomy at the same time and the

approval/denial for both took about 4 weeks. The surgeon said that she could

work around the mastopexy thing. She did an excellent job. I had a drain on

each side that stayed in about a week. No pain at all. But maybe that is just

me.

I took the usual 5 weeks off but was up and running errands around town 1 week

after surgery. I was glad for the extra time because I did need rest periods in

the afternoons. What helped me enormously was the fact that I (per 's

instructions) popped Vits E and C and upped my protein, water and exercise

regimen. I was amazed at how much that improved my healing time. I was doing

laps around the hospital ward the 2nd day after surgery. Everyone,

including myself, was surprised at how fast I bounced back!

The swelling did go down after about 2 months. I was wearing regular bras by

then. But as with any surgery, it took several months before things evened out

and I could see what size I actually was. I was, and still am, very pleased

with the results.

Good information, particularly about the pain! I'm going in March 5 for a

hernia repair/panniculectomy.

My question is: how do you exercise while recovering from a panni? Do you

wait until the drains are out? Obviously any abdominal crunches are a bad

idea -- (or so I assume). You just do cardio stuff? Trying to plan MY 5-week

recovery period...

Thanks,

/john

As far as exercise goes after a panni....

Walking, walking, walking.

It's the safest way. I did not attempt anything else, even after the drains

were out. I waited 2-3 monhts before attempting any other types of exercise.

Good luck with your surgery. I'm sure you will do just fine!

Are you talking about Endometrial Ablation? I think the " brand name " of the

instrument that they use is ThermaChoice, but I'm not sure. It's where they

go into your uterus through your cervix and fill a balloon with sterile

water, then heat the water to 188 degrees to burn away the uterine lining.

If this is what you're asking about, I had it done at the beginning of

January because my extremely heavy bleeding was causing serious problems

with my iron, not to mention being a real pain in the neck when I would

bleed through tampons and pads so quickly that they were hardly effective.

I was getting my period every three weeks and bleeding for 7 days, with the

first 2-3 days being the worst. During the first few days, I could hardly

function because of the blood loss, I had dizzy spells and terrible cramps.

It's an outpatient procedure and I was told to rest for 24 hours, then " take

it easy " for another 48. There was a lot of cramping for a few days and I

bled a lot at first. Then the bleeding stopped for a week and started up

again for 4 or 5 weeks. The bleeding wasn't like normal period bleeding

though, it was very thick, dark, mucousy blood. It wasn't really that bad

though, not nearly as bad as the periods that I'd been having.

Hey Sue,

I am four weeks out from TT/breast reduction. My recovery has been

remarkably easy. I was up and walking in the hospital about four hours after

surgery. I have a home office, and was able to work 3-4 hours a day within

72 hours. If I had to work onsite, I would have been off two weeks, if only

because I did require two naps each day.

Chances are your insurance company has written guidelines about how long

they are allowed to take to respond to an appeal. Find out--and keep them

honest on it. With mine, the breast reduction was approved within two

weeks...and the tummy tuck denied. That is the exact opposite of what I

expected. I appealed, and the TT was approved, and I had both done at the

same time.

I'm still swollen, mostly the tummy. It will be at least another month and

possibly more before I see the real results. I can tell you this though--my

shoulders are rejoicing! The new girls stand up proud and firm.

I am now submitting to insurance for my arms and legs. I'm expecting a fight

(such requests automatically go to medical review) but I believe they are

necessary procedures, and I'm willing to do what it takes to prove my point.

Best of luck to you!

PS: The surgeon also found a hernia, courtesy of my gallbladder removal, and

fixed that too.

I had an abdominoplasty, hernia repair and mastopexy done at the same

time. Surgery was Monday afternoon, I went home Tuesday morning. I

was off work for a total of three weeks. The first 10 days (while I

had the drains) I did nothing more strenuous than move from my

recliner to the bathroom. The third week I was walking, shopping,

just kind of normal stuff. My surgeon did not want me doing any

impact type work for the first two months post-op, so I did walking.

After that, I was back to jogging, aerobics, yoga - the full gamut.

On an interesting note, I saw my surgeon for my three month check-up

today, and asked about abdominal work, which I started about three

weeks ago. He told me there was absolutely no need to do any, that

my abs could not get any tighter. he had to point out to the me that

the " unusual " firmness and hardness in my mid-section were actually

muscles!! I've never felt them before :)

Yeow, you must have been sore.....

We're going to start walking tomorrow, so says She Who Must Be Obeyed.

Not having had the abdominoplasty, my abdominal muscles have a great deal of

room for improvement, once the hernia repair heals, in about 4 weeks.
