Three years ago, I had my upper jaw shortened (5mm)due to the fact that I had an open bite and by extension could not bite into my food or close my lips without straining and my condition has slowly been relapsing. I am now beginning to have an open bite again!!!! Granted it is much better than beforehand, but I am afraid that my jaw will continue to move as time progresses. I am so disappointed and angry... You would figure that after having gone through all that surgery that it would correct the problem. Has anyone else experienced this and if so did you have to get the surgery again? I have not seen my oral surgeon yet, but I do have an appointment to see him this Friday. I will be giving him a piece of my mind. If my surgeon knew that there was a good chance of relapse, he should have cut off more than 5 mm, perhaps 6 mm. It is so frustrating since the surgery isn't a walk in the park. *sigh* I am ready to go through the surgery again, but I am not looking forward to it. Guest guest Posted September 2, 2003 Report Share Posted September 2, 2003 Unfortunately YES, I have had the same thing happen.....before you go into your second surgery make sure to check your joints very well to make sure they aren't degenerating. This could be ONE of the many causes (or part of the combination of causes) for relapse. You want to make certain your joints are stable before you attempt to fix it again, I learned that the hard way and just went through SURGERY THREE in March. Granted my situation is unique and it's VERY rare to relapse twice, I'm hoping it stays this time. Five months later it's still ok but I see something happening on my left side that I'm not crazy about. we'll see what the surgeon says today, I have an appt with him in about an hour. Sometimes what appears to be jaw movement is really tooth movement which can be easily fixed by your ortho. I'm not sure if the doctor could have or should have chosen a greater amount of movement for your surgery. The key to maintaining the occlusion is balancing the bite. Over correction can be just as dangerous as under correction in causing relapse. I agree with Neta-lee's suggestion that you determine the status of your joints. May I also ask how old you were when you had your surgery? Sometimes relapse can occur when the jaw is operated on before growth is completed. I'd like to reassure those of you that are pre-op with open bites that it is a small minority of us who have this happen. We all hope that you won't need another surgery, Mel, keep us posted. I had the surgery 20 years ago (upper and lower jaw) and am currently considering undergoing it again because of a relapse in my overbite/crossbite and because my teeth have gone crooked again. I am seriously getting freaked by reading all the posts here, as when I had the surgery before I was 12 and wasn't sure what I was getting myself into....now I know only too well and am beginning to not want to go through this again. I would continue to monitor your progress and speak to your oral surgeon about your relapse. It took me the past 10 years (when my relapse began) to get to a stage where I am even slightly considering the surgery again, so just take your time with it and you'll make the right decision. good luck! > I am so frusterated!!
