Guest guest
Can I comment on that. I agree. When I first saw the original show on the mother/daughter (2 yrs ago) I was really disappointed even then what they showed them eating. That is NOT a typical post op diet. If that is what Dr. Fobi tells his folks to do no wonder there is such worry over protein malnutrition. When I had the gastric bypass in 1999 I was on a liquid/soft diet for the first 4 weeks. The reason for that is a) to allow the tummy to heal without jarring any sharp foods down there & to obviously kickstart the weight loss process. HOWEVER that said crackers were not on the list. My first " real " food post operatively was scrambled egg (protein) with a bit of cheese on it and boy was it delicious! Yes we did have yogurt as well again it was soft, but we were encouraged to have cottage cheese, protein shakes, etc. AND the way they showed her nibbling a cracker and saying she was full is BULLSH*T if she was it doesn't last trust me lol. They might make a 2 oz stomach but in time it will stretch. No it will never be 50-80 oz again it might stretch as much as 8 oz .. you'd have to have a scope and a test to find out but the point is what she was eating was more for show I think for the tv people at the time. I laughed my butt off. Not reasonable at all! Fruit isn't a biggie on the list either. Yes a variety can be good but my surgeon pushes LOW CARB EATING the rule is always PROTEIN FIRST .. WATER WATER WATER and then the other stuff if you have room. Yup no surprise here why they stalled out. Scary! However that said the surgery is also just a tool. Like anything else its how you use it to get the weight off and keep it off. I am 2.5 years out from surgery I can eat like a " light " appetite person. To give a real world analogy for example. If I were to go to Mcs I could eat a whole cheeseburger but that would be about it. No fries or anything else. I can't eat a whole meal like that and super size ha ha ha is a distant (thankfully) memory. BUT after all this time I noticed I regained about 10-15 lbs. Which again is normal they do say you will have some plateaus along the way plus you might " stabilize " out and regain a bit. Which I did. Then I got pregnant and in the course of the pregnancy have gained 23 normal pounds. So when I have the baby I want to lose those pregnancy pounds plus the 10-15 I gained and hopefully get back to a more reasonable (for me) weight. I can't rely on the surgery for that except limiting to a point in the quantity that I eat. While I might not eat much in one sitting I can eat again very easily in a few hours ... so I'm more like a constant grazer and grazing you have to watch out for. So for me its back to low carb, fill up on protein which is GREAT for you .. and hopefully gives me the staying power to not graze so much .. and if I do want to snack more well then I hope its all low carb choices. That and water. Then the other very important part of course. EXERCISE!!! So I'm so eager to get going again. I've been back to low carbing (pregnancy levels) this week and have felt much better and been sleeping better and I'm sure its related. OK this is longer than I expected lol. Lyssa 48 Hours That was surprisingly positive........not as bad of an Atkins bashing that I thought it would be. Two of my thoughts though: 1) The morbidly obese young woman at the beginning of the show who had gastric bypass along with her mother. Did ya'll notice what she and her mother were eating? Crackers, yogurt, bread, fruit, etc.... And she doesn't understand why she had stalled. Ugh!! 2) My DH and I were amazed at the doctor who said he had gone on Atkins, lost 20 pounds, never felt better in his life.......and yet would not recommend to his patients to try it because of the " high fat content " . Say what?!?!?! Go figure! Good night everyone! Cathy
