Guest guest
Forgive the cross-posting, please. This is something worth repeating. Quoting from the January-February 2002 issue of " Arthritis Today " magazine: " Drink eight glasses of water a day " is a familiar maxim. But do coffee, tea and soft drinks count toward the recommended daily fluid intake? Until now, most experts have said no. At the Center for Human Nutrition in Omaha, Neb., researchers conducted a study to find out. They gave 18 men in their 20s and 30s either water only, equal amounts of caffeinated soda and water, or equal amounts of soda, coffee and water, and recorded their hydration levels. The results: No matter what combination of fluids the men drank, they had the same levels of hydration. Brandeis, a dietician at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, says that beverages besides water can contribute to the daily fluid intake. But water is still the best first choice, she says. 'It's calorie free, costs nothing, and is healthy.' Carbonated waters, including those that have a hint of flavor, also contribute to your fluid goals. ......What's most important is to stay hydrated at all times. 'The best safeguard is to remember the " three Cs' " ...You are sufficiently hydrated when your urine is clear, colorless and copious. " While this small article did not address the fluid in protein shakes, or soups, or juices, if we follow those three " C's " , I gotta tell ya, even with the nearly 100 ounces I take in per day, I am NOT hydrated enough! Yikes! Alice in NY
Guest guest
Alice, Thanks for posting this. I never really made sense to me that only water counted as fluid. To me " Fluid is fluid is fluid. " You know, like " A rose by any other name is still a rose. " ;^) And unfortunately like you, my ~96 oz intake per day is NOT SUFFICIENT! YIKES!!! Guest guest
I am not qualified to give medical advice, know nothing about anything at all times, and so on. But I kinda doubt you're dying, cuz you are WAY too mouthy, my little (tall thin) darling.
