Thanks Netty -- the disaster struck rather too close for comfort (my

14-year-old son was 3 blocks away from the WTC when it happened), but he and all

my loved ones are safe and sound, just emotionally shook up.

I've heard cries of " Let's blow Afghanistan off the map " , but this only

pains me further -- the Afghani people suffer terribly under the Taliban regime

-- neither they nor the average Arab or Muslim anywhere are to blame for the

actions of a few madmen. We must not lower ourselves to the level of the

hate-filled ones who would do such things, even in our thoughts.

As I said in an earlier message that hasn't shown up, I'm about 80 miles

away. I learned at a Tuesday night service that two of the people I know at

the local UU congregation worked at the World Trade Center, and they both

got out safely.

Pete, - my last post was CC'ed to you, did you get it? This is

my fifth post to 12-step-free, I've seen only one of my four posts today

show up on the list, maybe this one will make it two for five.

Indeed. I have been wary of passing comment other than to offer my

condolences, so as not to intrude on the national grief felt by

Americans. It is true that likely hundreds of Britons have also been

killed, but that does not compare in terms of the national trauma

felt, though of course it is the same in bereavement for the loved

ones of British victims.

As one Afghan intervied by the New York Times put it: " There is not a

factory in Afghanistan worth the cost of a single missile " . The

country is in civil war already and many people are faced with

starvation. Again I will make no further comment as I believe that

is all that is appropriate at this time.

I'm scared, hearing lots of different things.

Grief and anger together makes for an unstable,

volatile situation......some feed on this. Hope

everyone keeps their head together and not react

in haste.

I agree with you, only the madmen should pay.
