Hi All,

I've been reading these messages since we saw our ortho last week and

she recommended this board. Our dd is almost 5 mo old, is brachy and

has a cephalic index of 100. I didn't know what that meant until our

ortho indicated this was on the severe end. Our plastic surgeon told

us banding was optional at this point, we could wait 8 weeks and see

if she improves (she's sitting up more now, so spending less time on

her flat head), but we decided to go ahead.

She gets her STARband on wednesday. Our ortho showed us photos of a

boy who was 106, and had good correction in terms of appearance.

However she told us that 5% is good, 10% correction is excellent. If

we get 10% we'll still be at 90. She very little asymmetry (<5mm) -

which is good because we don't have facial and ear issues.

Are there other moms of brachy that want to share their results? Also

can anyone explain the numbers +4, +5 that I've seen others using for

brachy?

thanks for all the helpful messages.

I think going ahead now with your daughter at 5 months and index of 100 is a good idea. Brachy is more difficult to correct because it involves more of the head - like half since it's the whole back of the head.

It's hard to say what correction would be expected. At her age I would say you would start seeing correction in 1-2 weeks after starting wear of her band. Depending on her growth she could get even better than 90. this is from the Aetna insurance policy...

For brachycephaly evaluation, a cephalic index 2 standard deviations below mean (head narrow for its length) or 2 standard deviations above mean (head wide for its length) warrants coverage of a trial of orthotic banding to correct the craniofacial deformity in a child after 4 months of age and before 12 months of age. (Note: These measurements are generally obtained by the orthotist fitting the band or helmet.)

Head width(eu - eu)

from euryon (eu) on one side of head to euryon (eu) on the other side

measures greatest transverse diameter or maximal head width

Head length(g-op)

from glabella point (g) to opisthocranion (op)

measures maximal head depth or length

Cephalic index =

Head width (eu - eu) x 100

Head length (g - op)

The mean is the average of the kids in whatever study determined these numbers.

+/-1 sd = 68.2% of the kids are within this range

+/- 2 sd = 95.5% of the kids are within this range

+/- 3 sd = 99.7% of the kids are within this range

I deal with statistics a lot in my job :)
