Guest guest
It pours! We were back & forth to Vanderbilt all weekend visiting Tim's daughter..who seems to be doing ok. She's eating at least. So, that's a start. It's 40 min one way. We went Friday, Saturday & Sunday. Plus I had to take my daughter to her dad's & pick her up. That's an hour's drive one way. We left Vandy Sunday & went straight to get Kelsey. I get home & find a call on the answering machine from the son of a family friend. I knew something wasn't right. So, I called. It's my dad. He is a life long smoker & has been having breathing problems for a month. Well, he quit smoking when it all started. Something I never thought I'd see!!! He's been in the hospital for a few days and they have diagnosed him w/ COPD. UGH! Well, while in the hospital his bowels have become blocked. He's refusing surgery till his surgeon comes in from out of town...which is tomorrow. Well, I called to check on him & the family friend now tells me he's on a ventilator & they have him sedated. This is within an hour of me finding out he's in the hospital. The nurse says someone from the family needs to be there NOW. So, I'm the closest of the siblings. 9pm last night I take off on a 3 hr drive to GA. I got to see him & the nurse acts like it was no big issue if I came. They were just waiting to see how things were going. If the bowel perfs before tomm they will do the surgery. If not they will wait for tomm for his surgeon. *WHEW* But I'm ticked I made that drive for pretty much no reason. He is breathing on his own they just put him on the vent because his O2 levels were sucky. So I slept for a few hours & drove back home. Get to work about an hour late. I'm sitting here typing this trying to stay awake! My brothers & I are going to have to sit down & talk about my dad's care after he gets out of the hospital. I honestly don't think he can go back home. He's going to need some sort of 24 hr care. I really don't want him to go into a nursing home. I know he'll hate that; but he can't do it alone anymore. I don't know if he would come live w/ me or not. Just have to cross that bridge when we get there. So, that's why I haven't been around much this weekend. Things really need to slow down. I can't do much more of this!

Guest guest
Things are no better. I talked to my cousin earlier. She's been out there all day w/ him. He is at least awake now. They don't have him so drugged. He wants OFF the ventilator. I have a feeling he will come off of it. He has a living will. They just don't have a copy yet. I wasn't enough in my mind frame to take it w/ me. My brother is faxing it to them. But, I think if they take him off the ventilator it won't be long. Especially w/ the blockage. He's not strong enough to survive the surgery w/out that assistance once he gets out of the OR. I think it's just a matter of time. I'm going back down there this weekend. Guest guest
hey , I so sorry you are having to deal with what you dealing with. My mom passed away when I was 18 and my dad when I was 21. Knowing your parent is in need of help and you can't do anything for them but be there, doesn't seem like much. But, it makes a difference to them. Even being sedated he knows your voice. god bless my prayers are with you all. > > I am sorry you have been going through all of this mess and I think I would > be ticked especially with the kind of attitude that you experienced when you > got down there. > Just hang in there and please keep us posted. > Lin > Lhsh@... > American by birth, > Saved by the grace of God. > > When it rains.... > > > It pours!
