Guest guest
My 5 1/2 month old dd has a flat back of the head. I think it looks very flat. From a birds eye view it looks crooked. My pedi. said she thinks it is fine but she said she would give me a referral to a neurologist if i wanted. So I took her to the neurologist and he said she is fine. he did a full exam of all of her motor skills and everything. I got a follow up letter from him today stating that she has mild positional plagiocephaly and that her development is within normal range. He also said her face and everything are symetrical. He said he does not reccomend any further assistance. I still think her head is flat and doesn't look right. My dh won't even talk to me about it anymore and I don't know what else to do. I keep reading where dr's say oh it will work itself out and you don't need a helmet and then it doesn't. the neurosurgeon said he would make the referal to the plastic surgey dept. who makes the helmets and they can make the final call if I feel more comfortable with that, but is that necessary and will they push the helmet anyways. I am very confused and driving myself and everyone else crazy. My baby is bald so I think Isee it more. I have a 4 yr. old who was born with a TON of hair. She went with us to the appt. and he asked to feel the back of her head. he said it was flat. I would have never known that. We have been doing repositioing but i am still concerned. advice please. thank you Debbie
Guest guest
I say go to the plastic surgeon if they will refer you. I don't think they will tell you to get a helmet if it is not needed. If you have a Cranial Tech in your area they can do a scan to get actual numbers to tell just how off she is. Jen Mommy to 4...and 1 more!!!! LULI'S HERE! Guest guest
Hi Debbie, Welcome to the group. Our stories are very similar. It took me a long time to get my baby's plagio diagnosed. Her pediatrician said her head was fine. I was referred to a pediatric neurosurgeon who told me she was fine. I went for another opinion and was told my baby did have plagio w/facial asymmetry but that a band wouldn't work for her. I left his office very upset!! I wasn't about to give up though, I kept on I KNEW her head was flat. I took her to Cranial Tech for a free eval. I was told what I knew all along, my baby DID have plagio. They took pictures and typed up a report. They overnighted it to my pediatrician. I had a prescription for a DOCband in my hand that very day. My ped apologized and said she didn't realize how bad it was. wasn't banded until she was almost 11.5 months old. She did receive great correction though. I think you need to keep going with this, don't give up. Are you located near a Cranial Tech office? You can get a free evaluation of your baby's plagio. Guest guest
Follow your instincts. No one knows your baby like you. My ped same the same thing- and I finally realized after 4 months of hearing it from him that I needed to take my own course of action. CT is great- and I am so happy we banded Jake. He has no idea it's even on- and in the three weeks he has had it we have seen tremendous improvements. He has mild to moderate plagio, and most people had no idea it was even flat. But it bothered me alot- It still amazes me that all the new moms I meet that ask about the helmet have no idea about the importance of rotating the side of the crib baby sleeps on, tummy time etc. Peds are so ill informed about plagio- it is very upsetting. Good luck and let us know how it goes! Tara Mom to Jake, DOC Band 5/1/06 > > My 5 1/2 month old dd has a flat back of the head. I think it looks > very flat. Guest guest
Hello. Like others have said... you need to follow your gut and do what YOU think is right. Sadly, MANY Drs will say that it isn't a big deal and that it will " round out on its own " ... but that is not usually the case. With our Daughter, I initially took her to a Neurosurgeon also and he was very short with me and said it was " very mild " . However, I took her for a 2nd opiinion to a craniofacial/plastic surgeon and he said she was moderate. We ended up then trying repositioning until she was about 6 months old and then we went ahead with the band. I have no regrets! I am so happy we got her banded.... her head also had a very " crooked " look to it. I felt that the plastic surgeon was much more willing to listen to my concerns. The Neuro was basing his opinions on the fact that the shape of her head would not hamper her brain's development. Good luck and keep us updated. Guest guest
I am sorry you are having such a hard time getting the answers you need. If you feel strongly that your dd needs treatment, then like everyone else has said, trust your instincts and keep on it. Would your pede write the prescription for you? Keep at it, Debbie. No one knows your child like you do. Good luck and keep us posted! Becky , repo grad > > My 5 1/2 month old dd has a flat back of the head. I think it looks > very flat. Guest guest
You know your child best....we were kind of in the opposite boat. They told us about the torticollis at 4 months and we got that fixed...they never brought up plagio again......until he was 9 months! We got the DOC band at 10 months and after 16 weeks we saw complete correction. In hindsight I am glad we waited. He was only moderate so we didn't need a ton of time for correction and because he wasn't growing as fast as a younger baby we made it with only one band. I guess what I am trying to say is that you have time to decide.....go see Cranial Tech! Meagan Nolan's mom Graduated 3-06 > > My 5 1/2 month old dd has a flat back of the head.
