Guest guest
Hi, I just joined this support group. I am 53 years old and have just been told that I need orthognathic surgery. I was wondering if anyone else is as old as I am and what has been their experisnce. How did you decide at this age whether to go for it or not? Guest guest
Thanks for posting in reply. I don't have a date for surgery yet. I'm not even sure I want to do this. I'm to go talk to the surgeon on Aug 28. I've talked to the orthodontist already. He seems to think my insurance will pay for the surgery part and I have part coverage on the braces. If I decide to go for this, I'm guessing surgery will be next year. The ortho guy said I'd be in braces about 12 months before surgery. So your guy said you would loose your teeth if you didn't have this done?
Guest guest
I forgot to say what they want to do. I'm a little fuzzy on that. I know my lower jaw is too small and he said something about my upper jaw but I'm not sure what they want to do with it. I guess I'll know more after I talk to the surgeon. Guest guest
Cammie rocks! I think she's a few years older than you. She'll be able to give you great insight. My own personal experience has been pretty positive. I'm five months post-op from upper and lower now. Good luck and ask away! > Hi, I just joined this support group. Guest guest
I was 56 (near 57) when I had my lower jaw advanced in June 2002. It went like a textbook case, and I did super well, and am very pleased with the outcomes. I was warned that I was in danger of losing my teeth if I didn't do it. I asked every dentist I could find whether it was necessary, and couldn't find one to tell me not to do it, so I figured I'd better, um, well, not grit my teeth, but go ahead and do it. I'm glad now that I did. It wasn't a lot of fun (except that I did meet some really nice folks in the process) but it's over now, and I got good benefits from it. cammie > Hi, I just joined this support group. Guest guest
what I ment about loseing my teeth was if I didn't take care of what I had I would lose them because I had missing teeth and they were moving because of the ementy spaces, most of the dentistes I;ve meen to said that they can only do so much to my much on mt teeth because I had a overbite and underbite , my jaw on top was not wide enough and it was off, Im glad that I had thid surgery done, read some of these messages that people wrote about there surgery and most of them are glad they had it done, keep me posted.
