Guest guest
.. This is why I think the 1-5 scale of testing strength is terribly subjective. I totally agree. I always wondered how they could base your strength on that. Also, sure, I can seem 'strong' for the one push he has me do, but if I do a few more, I cannot do anymore. It is the endurance strength that really kills me. Of course when I am in a flare, even one will bother me. Zanna
Guest guest
I told him from the first step I can't do stairs. It doesn't get worse with time ... it's bad from the beginning! Yes, yes, yes.....doing stairs was what finally made me go get help!!! I was looking at model homes and had walked up two flights and on the third house, I could not lift my legs to go up again..... My friend lives in a two story and on rare occasion I will pull myself up the stairs to sit in the pool table room. It takes me some time and always makes me winded but I hate being left out!!!! I wish they had a handrail on each side. That would make it easier. Our club house in our community, has 4 or 5 steps into it with no handrails. Does that make any sense???? I have a very hard time going there. I think I am going to write a letter. They have handicapped spots but no way to get to the door!!! There should be a handicapped person involved in all aspects of architecture. I think also they should just build all the toilets higher and maybe have one stall with a shorter one for children. I have a hard time getting off teh regular ones and end up having to wait for someone to get out of the big one. Maybe I will moonlight as an architect from my traveling doctors job......hehe. Guest guest
You are so right about that. The handicapped stall wasn't available the other day so I used a regular one. I was so exhausted after spending about 5 minutes trying to figure out how to get off the toilet. There was nothing to grab on to or wedge myself onto. Short toilet, large stall! I finally flung myself forward and grabbed my purse and pulled myself up. Lucky my purse has really strong straps! Vickie There should be a handicapped person involved in all aspects of architecture. Guest guest
My DH drives a 4Runner (SUV) and some days I need to use my hands to lift my leg to get into the seat. :-( I have an S10 blazer SUV (4 door). It is the perfect height for me. My tush is about even with the driver's seat so I just sit and turn but sometimes I need to lift my legs in with my hands. > >Our club house in our community, has 4 or 5 steps into it with no handrails. Does that make any sense???? I have a very hard time going there. I think I am going to write a letter. They have handicapped spots but no way to get to the door!!! Don't they have a ramp for wheelchairs? BY all means, write that letter! I'm sure there are many others who suffer just as you do. If nothing else, a little reminder that they will be considered negligent for not providing a rail if someone falls should make the Powers-that-be get to thinking. They have a sidewalk that goes around the building to the pool entrance and once inside the pool area, you can walk a flat surface to the clubhouse. Only problem with that is, wet concrete and unstable walkers don't go well together and if you were in a wheelchair you would have to manuever the door open with your key and try to hold the gate while you wheeled yourself in. Someone disabled that didn't live there would not be able to get into the clubhouse to make inquiries. A group of activists recently came to Modesto and insisted that the mayor and city council members try to negotiate downtown in manual wheelchairs. All it took was one member falling over on uneven pavement to see the problem vividly in a way that a written or verbal description never could express. They still haven't done anything, though. My problem is this-why do we have to wait until someone gets hurt to fix things???? When we first moved out here, I noticed a small stretch on the freeway that very little shoulder then a huge drop (like a small cliff) with no guardrails. I told my family 'someone is going to go over that one day and get killed'. Well, two years later, a car went over, someone died and sure enough just a couple months later there was a guardrail. My daughter had to write a letter to the city about concerns she was having (a school assignment) and that is what she chose to write about. Preventing the accidents before they happen. Take care, Zanna
Guest guest
I went to a swim meet with Kylie once and there were NO handicapped bathrooms in this locker room. The only toilets they had looked like they came from a grade school and were about a foot off the toilet. That was the day I learned to go standing up. It was also the very first day that I wished I was a man.......LOL.... Zanna
Guest guest
The rheumy did mention the endurance factor, that sometimes you can start fairly strong and then with time and exertion get weaker. I told him from the first step I can't do stairs. It doesn't get worse with time ... it's bad from the beginning!
