Jai, do you use one patch or dose Duragesic come in 100's? I agree the cost is huge and I get it only because for now my insurance is so good, I only pay $12 for mine. But have to buy the clear adhesives to go over patches. Jai, do you change every 72 hours also. I wonder if there is reason to not be change sooner? Like every 60 hours instead. It starts to loose its power for me a good 12 hours before changing them. Well anyway, glad they work for you. I have one more question...sorry, but how does Methadone affect a person? Does it cause dizziness, can I use it with heart problems especially with the 3 new problems now have? Just do not know effect on body for Methadone and am curious. Thanks for any info on it.

Pain control

Hi Laurie,

With certain narcs there is a ceiling, meaning a person can go up to a max dose then it is not safe to take anymore. This is not so with Morphine. There is no ceiling, a person can keep upping the dose as needed. I worked a lot with terminal cancer patients with intractable pain. I have seen astronomical doses of morphine given to people. Don't get me wrong, a person has to work their way up the dosing scale. You cant just give someone huge doses if they have never had it before.

I am on Fentanyl too (Duragesic patches). I am also on 100mcg. It works great for me. I was originally on MSContin, extended dose morphine but it did not give me enough coverage. I was having peaks and valley, the pain control was not constant. I find with the Fentanyl it is more even coverage. Fentanyl is actually a drug used in anesthesia. It is used in smaller doses for pain control.

I have a question. Has anyone ever went from Fentanyl patches to Methadone? If so did it control the pain? How often do you take it? I ask because my doc and I were talking and I was just wondering about possibly switching because the Methadone is much cheaper. I have Medicare/Medicaid but it does not cover the whole cost of the Fentanyl which is quite expensive. I would appreciate any info on how Methadone works. Thanks guys, Love Jai

JoAnn - Methadone is a Schedule II narcotic just like many of the more potent pain meds that a lot of the folks here are on. You would really need to talk with your doc about whether or not it's use would be contraindicated for you because of your heart issues.

Any of the narcotics can cause dizziness and some of us are more prone to it than others. Any of the narcotics make me very dizzy which then leads to the nausea and so on. That's why I take the meclazine to help counteract the inner ear disturbance that, for some people, accompanies the use of narcotics.

Unfortunately I couldn't stay on methadone (and it was less expensive than some of the other meds) because it kicked up the SAME/myositis thing for me. I thought it was pretty helpful with pain. Barbara

Thank you Barbara for the information. I just wondered how effective it was on muscle spasm type pain, for the inflammation and nerves........never heard anyone mention just what it helps with, say it helps but not sure what helps with exactly. Guess maybe asking for to much detail? Anyway, how are you doing my friend? I need to phone as miss hearing that Yankee accent although must admit that Ginny has you beat on this one. Love calling Ginny just to hear her talk and then hear her sweet son. Is like one minute smiling from her talking and next smiling listening to her son and her talk. Thanks for the great entertainment Ginny. Barbara what will you do for Thanksgiving? Will you go and spend time with nieces and nephews as think saw you wrote about that, just not sure. Hope you have good time. Well let you go before chapter 20 gets started here.
